Your advice sought please.

The problem manifested itself shortly after the end of 9 hours of off-roading my G developed an odd whining noise on take off that disapeared above 20 mph.

The noise happens irrespective of being in 2 wheel drive, hi or low 4 wheel drive and with or without difflocks on. It sounds just like the noise of a release bearing on a clutch that that whines on take up, which is interesting as its a auto. If it helps diagnose the fault we had been through lots of water, frequently up to wheel height and occasionally mid head light level at bow wave.

Any ideas as to where I should start looking for the problem?

It drives ok apart from the noise, the noise happened every time on start off for the 35 miles home.

Re: Strange noise on take off

Hi any whine when stationary? any whine moving backwards? does noise come from the front / rear /underneath? does it disappear at 20 mph because of other background noises? is there any vibration.in the steering wheel...through the gear lever...through the drive mode selection lever..when coasting at 10 mph (gear lever in neutral) same with drive mode selector in neutral...did you have the plastic bung in the bottom of the bell housing to protect the torque converter from ingress of mud which sets like concrete with the engine heat ....

Re: Strange noise on take off

Fixwin,

Firstly thanks for your response, answers as follows.

No whine when stationary, noise coming from the front (I think). The noise did not appear to be "covered" by other background noise above twenty rather it appeared to lessen once the speed approached 20 and then stop.

Haven't tried coasting but will do when I get home.

I believe the bung was in place but can't remenber! I must admit that for the later quarter of the run I was grounding out between the ruts a fare bit unlike the LR's who were all running with raised ride hieghts, mostly this was just grass and mud but i suppose it could have forced the bung out??

If mud has got into the torque convertor is this terminal?

Hi could be a partially disengaged front difflock... get underneath and make sure the ram moves through a full cycle..the moving part could be packed out with mud. the lever inside will go the full distance but the difflock ram may not....

Hi G-Day...came across your thread and i am having exactly the same issues with whining...

Did you have any luck figuring/fixing out as it would be very helpful...

Just spent 6 months restoring a 1988 280GE Auto and now on engine..

Any help would be grateful with this whining...

Thx Tony
