Bit of a dangerous place to be at the moment. RIM used to be the safest saharan country and now pretty dodgy, especially if you are french.
Background reading
Mike, I was looking forward to hearing about your trip too - lets hope you get another opportunity. The organisers are going to get a lot of flack for this though I did read that the insurers pulled out at the last moment.
It is such a complex political problem and with the tuareg rebellion to the east(oil and uranium), sudan and darfur(no oil or uranium), western sahara( probably no oil) american soldiers on the ground under the Pan Sahel agreement, american polititians supporting corrupt governments ( better the devil you know?) - all that coupled with the french not honouring aggrements when the various colonies gained independance it's no wonder there is unrest.
Overall it's a great pity for everyone involved - responsible tourism is desperately neeeded in RIM.
I sometimes think Osama bin Laden gave the american government exactly what they needed - a concept of a large enemy to fight - yes these terror attacks and threats are by bad people and they know how to strike fear into western governments but these are disparate groups who often war among themselves.
"A bunch of idiots with A.K.'s is no worse than a a bunch of idiots with M16's. It all depends on who's side we are expected to be."
The Mauritanians have just closed the border with Morrocco to tourists so the Budapest-Bamako will probably go on hold and this lot are there now

Background reading is most interesting when you consider the event never had to be cancelled up to this year given the obvious threats expressed in the past.
Somewhere someone knows alot more than they are saying and I am definitely not a conspiracy theorist.
Overall I feel the local economy there has lost far more than they will gain by this "terrorist exposure" coup.
Pity, for me it would have been the trip of a lifetime as the BF Goodrich/ work involvement would have enabled closer access and involvement than any "pay as you go trip " would have got me.
C'est la vie.
Regards,
Mike
