Fellow Gs

Well I asked some of you about certificates of conformity a few weeks ago. I got my G after it arrived in the UK and it is now MOT'd and I am waiting for Customs to assess value for duty purposes. They are not quick !

Once they send the assessment - this has so far taken 5 days and I am still waiting, even if you transfer money electronically they say they can't confirm receipt for 3 days even though the money is in their account the same day. You can't go to a counter anywhere to pay because they do not have one - even in Dover where they are based - which rules out sending a bank draft or cash. It really is an archaic way of doing business.
After they confirm reciept of funds it then takes another 3-4 days to get the certificate that tax has been paid. Onky then can you go to to get your number plates. Aaaaargh !

I do no think I can get UK plates until 2008 at this rate.

But more importantly the car paased its MOT and it is in perfect order and I am like a little kid with his first tonka toy. It is a brilliant brilliant car - (a G500 by the way). The power is amazing, the vault like quality like no other Mercedes I have ever owned - I am a bit of a nut on that front.

Now I understand why you all rave about the G.

I hope to hook up with some of you at some G event in 2008. Off to the Alps next week to try it out in the white stuff. It is currently runnning on Michelin snow tyres - just the job. I have a set of those for my Merc estate and they turned that into a leech on snow - fantastic. You would not beleive the transformation until you try them. Bit like a G - difficult to believe until you try one !

Wishing you all a very happy Christmas and jolly new year

From a very happy new G owner

Congratulations on the first stage of getting your G. You mention a duty - is it a US model then? What year?

The Club should. I think they enquire about model owned when you first join... problem is that the records are not updated when you change model, which happens all too often!

Re: G heaven

Thanks for your replies

It's Swiss and so is due for car tax and VAT.

Funnily enough I got a letter from Customs on Saturday morning asking me to send another document so that is going today.

Can someone tell me if the jack should be in that big under flooor compartment under the rear seat (mine is a LWB). It isn't there.

I only have an all German manual which is an original mini lever arch file in the glove compartment but I don't understand German. Does anyone know where I can get an English version please ?

Also having changed all the batteries I now know that I only have one operational key fob (to turn on/off Merc alarm). Can I still get these from Mercedes ?

thanks

Micky

Re: G heaven

What year is it?

You can get keys from MB but call them to see what you need first as its a whole raft of paperwork. If you have the IR keys MB can reprogram them if that is all that is wrong. You can also set up your mobile/pda to work as your key assuming it has an IR port.

The jack (if its a pre 2001 ish) should be under the front passenger seat.

English versions of manuals are like gold dust - you may have to seelt for a digital copy. You can try contacting MB for this as well but more than likely will have to see if a club member can copy you theirs.

Re: G heaven

The jack should be under the front right seat. Passenger's on a LHD obviously. There is a bracket into which it clamps. The rear under seat storage boxes are for warning triangles flashing beacons etc. Big amps if you choose.
The key fobs need to be matched to your car. Press the button quickly twice and then turn on the ignition- don't start. That should do it I think.
The handbooks contain some useful stuff, I have the full english manual but no knowledge of where to get a copy. If you have any queries just ask.
Pictures please

Re: G heaven

Dear Mortinson

Thank you. Mine is first issue G500 (463). First registered on 12.11.1998.

I know the dash changed a bit but essentially the car remained the same for a while so it would be great to get a pdf of the earliest ones you have - 2002 ?

I am really grateful. My email is mhatchwell@davenportlyons.com

Sincere thanks

Micky
