Hello All

I'vebeen looking for a goog G resource site and I think I've found it!

Am currently knee deep in a conversion on my 82 280GE LWB. Old School yes I know, but it is a labour of Love :D

I have managed to fit an engine and manual box from a MB 310D Van under the bonnet. I've been running a van with the same engine and gerbox for a couple of years now - the reliability is staggering.
I've completely rebuilt the engine from scratch and replaced everything from the timing chain to the rings.

So I think I'll have a pretty unique G. the engine is a 2.8 5-cylinder normally aspirated mechanical diesel. The engine is installed, up and running, since last week.

I'm going to have to fabricate a new propshaft from the gearbox to the transfer-box and am trying to locate a machine shop that turn-out what I need done.

So fun, fun, fun & guess what I'll be working on in my spare time over Christmas :o

I do appear to have an issue however, the old gear box was automatic so the auto pedal-box I have is not suitable, I must locate from somewhere a RHD manual pedalbox as it does not appear that I can modify the original.
Any pointers on who to contact or where to look would be much appreciated!

btw. I currently have an un-wanted(but not un-loved) 280GE 6-cylinder lump & auto box occupying alot of space on my workshop floor, I think it would be a crying shame to scrap it, perhaps there is some who knows someone who might like to give it a loving home?

I will be happy to help with transportation.

I hope to meet and speak with you all soon!

My Kindest Regards

Patrick.

Welcome Patrick,
I'm in Wicklow too..!
However, I'm no use to you with mechanical advice though best of luck with the project.

The extent of my worries is trying to find a replacement centre cap for my 16"
steel wheel..anyone got one lying around they don't want?

All the best David

Brilliant, I'll be heading up the way so this weekend!

I have an engine crane, so i can lift the engine & box into the back of the van. Do you have a crane to lift it out? or should I bring mine with me?

Would it be possible for you to PM me your contact details and address so as to make suitable arrangements for times etc?

I'll pick-up the bits for dathi's too, can you PM his contact details aswell?

Regards

Patrick

That's great! thanks to Fixwin and Patrick the G will be looking a little bit sharper for the Christmas.

Cap came off because grease was leaking out of the wheel centre.
Got a mechanic friend to tighten things up and do grease top up..said it might be bearings going hence loosening?

Cheers Daithi

Hi Patrick + Welcome to the Forum\Club.

You may already know.. another Irish member, Gdiver (Fergus) has a similarly engined 463, from a sprinter if memory serves me well(?). Hope to get the two of you together at our next gathering, and you can compare notes.

I trust you will find the club to be all you expected and more.

Happy Xmas to you and yours.

Hi Patrick,

Nice to have you onboard, we need more of a G presence around here and suitably interested owners.

Have fun with Chris and Peter, you will find they are incredible people to have on your side. The wealth of information and help I have received from them and Marty ,well you couldn't put a value on it seriously.

If you are ever over my side (next stop New York) drop me a line and we'll meet up for a chat over a cup of tea or something.

Regards,

Mike
