Morning all
I'm making a quick trip to Germany this next week (22nd & 23rd) to inspect a couple of 99 Classics with a view to purchase. One of them is a low miler. Any tips on things I should look out for would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks in advance
David P.

Re: G500 Classic Advice

Hope it comes through for you this time!

If they are from the original owner see if you can get the Memorabilia that went with it otherwise no different from any other G.

...and remember only a few hundred were ever made.

Thanks, me too
One of them is a one owner. Interesting to see if he still has it.
I'll keep you posted.

Good luck, I concur with scouse g - those 500's will chew through petrol like a fat lass at a free cream cakes party!

WKD V8 rumble and roar, the temptation  to floor it will be overwhelming, just make sure you don't have the trip computer showing your MPG!

Re: G500 Classic Advice

The wheels have paint on them which matches the body. Very subtle. Some one told me that the paint flaks off and can be costly to repair. Use it as a negotiation point if it is not good. Check out whether it has had its regular services- plugs, filters, oils.
Lovely cars. Very quiet to drive

Re: G500 Classic Advice

Hi David ..good luck with your purchase....they still suffer from water in the front footwells caused by wiper spindle wear...lift the wiper off the screen and waggle the shaft where it comes out through the metal surround...any slop at all will let the water in...they do not cost much to buy but the manhours costs if you pay to get them fitted are high.. MB GBP 300++....and if you fit them yourself you will enhance your awareness of MB engineering at the expense of an increased vocabulary and remodelled fingers...
Aged hydraulic oil will be contaminated with moisture which in turn corrodes the brake cylinders and calipers..chances are if it is not stamped in the service book or supported by an invoice it has not been done... Note: It should be done every 3 (three years) in European weather conditions...FULL service history AND supporting invoices go a long way to telling you how well the G' has been looked after...........

Re: G500 Classic Advice

Oh yeah those wheels are special as they look identical in production to the regular 500 wheels, but the face is machined aluminium, not painted silver, and as mentioned the slopes on the spokes are painted in the bodycolour, or black, not sure.
Only other differentiating feature I can remember on the outside is the rubber strip being covered in a different-style sticker. I used to think it was a chrome strip but that one you posted looks like multiple lines.

Re: G500 Classic Advice

Remembered a few more things to check on that vintage G, the illuminated side steps, door closing switch (that turns on interior lights-make sure it does turn them on immediately), and the rubber sleeves around the wiring that goes from doors to body. They tend to disintegrate (in hot weather perhaps?)
None major concerns but could be useful for bargaining, if you can get a German to do that in the first place!

Thanks lads
Good points.
Here's a close-up of the wheels you mention
I know what you mean about the lined rubber strip trim. You can make it out better on this pic of another Classic

Re: G500 Classic Advice Update

Just returned from Stuttgart.
Agreed a deal on this one with 57000 kms.
Genuine guy and a real G wagen enthusiast owner. He's currently enjoying life with a new Kompressor
Returning first week in Jan. - hopefully- to collect.
Just what I've been looking for.
Thanks again for your advice

Thanks Fred, would you really do that for me. You're a star
Mind you, I would have to come and cook for you in your restaurant for the weekend. I've always fancied that. Already got the menu worked out too Cumberland Sausage and Chips, Tattie Pot (and chips) Pork Pie and beans only to mention a few. That would be OK, wouldn't it.

Re: G500 Classic Advice

What a great colour! now the painful bit of waiting until you collect it! Time will drag on and on and on! :? (oh yes always uo for some sausages and tatties! )

Congrats on the new addition, not sure what the 'greenies' are like up where you are, but to save the time wasters who want to stop you in the car park at the supermarket and complain that you are an 'eco vandal', 'carbon criminal', ‘Rain forest rapist’, ‘environmental enemy’, (the list goes on) I have cheated a bit and removed the 500 and v8 insignia  and if any one asks I say it runs on dead environmentalists, (in a Russian Accent   ) and they tend to leave you alone! Mind you in your neck of the woods they probably don’t mind you having a sensible ‘truck’ like a G – where I am they just a bunch of pseudo, envious sheep! :x :x

Anyway back on track, is yours the one that came with all the special additions, (tie clips, pictures etc etc) and did you manage to get any of those? Any chance of seeing some interior shots, when you get her. Can't wait to come to the next shin dig and meet you see your G!

enjoy :P :P :P 8)

Re: G500 Classic Advice

point taken spider, but a gift is a gift so cant turn a free car down can you, even if it does attract BMW drivers to ram into the side of it!

im still not going to hide it when i eventually bring it up to uni, even if the green party make up most of the professors! (great debates in the bar, cant wait to get more info on your side of the arguement so i can really bang the nail into their idealistic coffin!)

I saw the pictures! well what do you expect from a BMW driver?

One of the things I can pass on to you, some times it pays not to advertise - IF people know you have a 500 V8, they are less inclined to race you - I just love seeing peoples faces when you 'blow them away'

(I did that on all my AMG's - left the AMG badge on - took off the engine insignia - their error  - that goes out to the bloke in the subaru who tried it on saturday evening - bet you and your mates did'nt think a 'shed' could move so fast!) Mwa ha! ha!

BTW - good call on Huss's avitar!

Re: G500 Classic Advice

Good Morning.
Thanks again for all your comments and words of encouragement. It's good to know I have your approval.
Mortinson, it was partly the knowledge that you liked the Classic that confirmed it was the one to go for, thanks.
So far, I have never experienced any adverse comments towards the G, but as I live in a mostly rural part of the country with a lot of working off-roaders about, I suppose the anti's are in the minority. That might all change with this new one mind you.
Will post a few more pics to my gallery soon. A couple of the pictures will show it with 16" alloys on. These have the winter tyres on and come with the vehicle. The guys new Kompressor is the one parked behind the Audi RS4 (my hire car for the trip - but that's another story) Don't have any better shots than that I'm afraid. It was a nice machine though.
BTW, both people that were selling these Classics either had already or had lined up, Kompressors. It seems that these are the ones that German G enthusiasts are now going for.

What a great colour - I just love it! could some one tell me what that colour is and was it just a limited run?

(ohhh Like it better than the green - Sorry Maxwell and Fred, though you still have the vote with Mrs Spider1V ! :P )

That's ok - the green is my least favourite colour too... the purple was restricted to the classic. Its even more amazing in real life as it very subtly changes colour.

I'd have one if they made a diesel.

Re: G500 Classic Advice

There was a website devoted to the Classic for a while. It's no longer available from the usual sources but you can find a version of it on the web Archive
If you copy this url
http://www.graz.daimlerchrysler.com/20yg/e/start.htm
into the take me back dialog box, you should see a list of all the dates the site was archived. Clicking on one brings up the old site. Warning, it can be slow, frequently offline and not all of the links still work, but be patient and try cliking on a few of the blocked out or blank links and it is suprising what is still there. Be careful you don't end up with two http://'s when you paste the link
Have fun

Super car David, you must be delighted. A nice creative way to buy, rather than a boring old trip to a dealer to get stiffed, too. If only it was RHD I'd show the pix to the Gee-hating SWMBO, I reckon she'd weaken.....

Re: G500 Classic Advice

Story with the RS4 in brief as follows
Booked a Golf with Avis Stuttgart Airport. Informed it was an Opel Meriva when I arrived and then, after what I think in retrospect was subtle vetting, was offered this virtually new 340 Km. 420 HP RS4 for an extra 36 euros a day. Quite honestly I couldn't believe it. Sting in the tail though as I was sprinting away from the desk in as dignified a manner as I could, was the instructions not to bring it back scratched as there was a 960 euro excess. Steep, but what a machine and worth every penny I reckon. Both G owners had to have a go in it of course. We had some fun.
