G500 Classic Advice
Morning all
I'm making a quick trip to Germany this next week (22nd & 23rd) to inspect a couple of 99 Classics with a view to purchase. One of them is a low miler. Any tips on things I should look out for would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks in advance
David P.
Hope it comes through for you this time!
If they are from the original owner see if you can get the Memorabilia that went with it otherwise no different from any other G.
...and remember only a few hundred were ever made.
Make sure you fill it up b4 you come into the uk , lol.
Good luck, I concur with scouse g - those 500's will chew through petrol like a fat lass at a free cream cakes party!
WKD V8 rumble and roar, the temptation  to floor it will be overwhelming, just make sure you don't have the trip computer showing your MPG!

The wheels have paint on them which matches the body. Very subtle. Some one told me that the paint flaks off and can be costly to repair. Use it as a negotiation point if it is not good. Check out whether it has had its regular services- plugs, filters, oils.
Lovely cars. Very quiet to drive
Hi David ..good luck with your purchase....they still suffer from water in the front footwells caused by wiper spindle wear...lift the wiper off the screen and waggle the shaft where it comes out through the metal surround...any slop at all will let the water in...they do not cost much to buy but the manhours costs if you pay to get them fitted are high.. MB GBP 300++....and if you fit them yourself you will enhance your awareness of MB engineering at the expense of an increased vocabulary and remodelled fingers...
Aged hydraulic oil will be contaminated with moisture which in turn corrodes the brake cylinders and calipers..chances are if it is not stamped in the service book or supported by an invoice it has not been done... Note: It should be done every 3 (three years) in European weather conditions...FULL service history AND supporting invoices go a long way to telling you how well the G' has been looked after...........
Good luck david
Oh yeah those wheels are special as they look identical in production to the regular 500 wheels, but the face is machined aluminium, not painted silver, and as mentioned the slopes on the spokes are painted in the bodycolour, or black, not sure.
Only other differentiating feature I can remember on the outside is the rubber strip being covered in a different-style sticker. I used to think it was a chrome strip but that one you posted looks like multiple lines.
Remembered a few more things to check on that vintage G, the illuminated side steps, door closing switch (that turns on interior lights-make sure it does turn them on immediately), and the rubber sleeves around the wiring that goes from doors to body. They tend to disintegrate (in hot weather perhaps?)
None major concerns but could be useful for bargaining, if you can get a German to do that in the first place!
Now that will look good around the lakes :D :D :D

Its a beaut David
and the best of Irish luck with it
Congratulations - she looks stunning and will be a fun drive home in! Though not sure about the stuffed dog driving....
Hi David,
Congratulation mate that car is really looking good....I'll pick it up for you if you want and drive it back to the lake...Promise I wont take Mark with me... :D :D :D
I'm coming!!!! Stuttgart to Edinburgh! Bratwurst to Cumberland Sausage!
can we all come
Hi David congratulations only 57.000cliks...no leaks and weeps then..health to enjoy....
Congratulations.... that G500 Classic is top on my wettest dreams list!
Looks great, congrats! The alloys looking like new too, and no rust bubbles visible beneath the mirrors, I think you got good value for money.
What a great colour! now the painful bit of waiting until you collect it! Time will drag on and on and on! :? (oh yes always uo for some sausages and tatties! )
Congrats on the new addition, not sure what the 'greenies' are like up where you are, but to save the time wasters who want to stop you in the car park at the supermarket and complain that you are an 'eco vandal', 'carbon criminal', ‘Rain forest rapist’, ‘environmental enemy’, (the list goes on) I have cheated a bit and removed the 500 and v8 insignia  and if any one asks I say it runs on dead environmentalists, (in a Russian Accent   ) and they tend to leave you alone! Mind you in your neck of the woods they probably don’t mind you having a sensible ‘truck’ like a G – where I am they just a bunch of pseudo, envious sheep! :x :x
Anyway back on track, is yours the one that came with all the special additions, (tie clips, pictures etc etc) and did you manage to get any of those? Any chance of seeing some interior shots, when you get her. Can't wait to come to the next shin dig and meet you see your G!
enjoy :P :P :P 8)

Stunning looking G David, you'll certainly enjoy the drive back from Stutgart.

I don't have any problems since one very kind and thoughtfull member stuck 1.4i badges on my G

Spider1V
just borowed a laptop as mine is not in the best of health at present :?
i have only just seen this topic
that is one fine G :!: I hope and wish you happy motoring and "overtaking" david
(any pics of his kompressor G  what did he pay for it :?: )
point taken spider, but a gift is a gift so cant turn a free car down can you, even if it does attract BMW drivers to ram into the side of it!
im still not going to hide it when i eventually bring it up to uni, even if the green party make up most of the professors! (great debates in the bar, cant wait to get more info on your side of the arguement so i can really bang the nail into their idealistic coffin!)

Don't dispair Tom, I've put a V8 AMG 55K badge on my G Wizz city car
least that hasnt got intakes for offroad incidents!
im sorry low blow there!
Tom
p.s i really like the wheels on the classics, they finish off the look in my opinion

I saw the pictures! well what do you expect from a BMW driver?
One of the things I can pass on to you, some times it pays not to advertise - IF people know you have a 500 V8, they are less inclined to race you - I just love seeing peoples faces when you 'blow them away'
(I did that on all my AMG's - left the AMG badge on - took off the engine insignia - their error  - that goes out to the bloke in the subaru who tried it on saturday evening - bet you and your mates did'nt think a 'shed' could move so fast!) Mwa ha! ha!
BTW - good call on Huss's avitar!

Will post a few more pics to my gallery soon. David
David,
What a great colour - I just love it! could some one tell me what that colour is and was it just a limited run?
(ohhh Like it better than the green - Sorry Maxwell and Fred, though you still have the vote with Mrs Spider1V ! :P )
Spider1V
That's ok - the green is my least favourite colour too... the purple was restricted to the classic. Its even more amazing in real life as it very subtly changes colour.
I'd have one if they made a diesel.
Super car David, you must be delighted. A nice creative way to buy, rather than a boring old trip to a dealer to get stiffed, too. If only it was RHD I'd show the pix to the Gee-hating SWMBO, I reckon she'd weaken.....
there was a RHD for sale not too long ago....

wish i'd seen that.......
Maxwell Smart wrote:there was a RHD for sale not too long ago....

Yeah, probably with an asking price twice as big as what David is paying for his and with twice the mileage!
Oh the joys of insularity!
whats the story with the rs4, wish my courtesy car was like that!
yer,and he was a member that originally owned it.it was at the meet a few years ago.
ended up being brought by another member,i think he was asian :?: i spoke to him last year and i remember him saying that he brought it without the wifes blessing :!: :!: :!: :!:
he hid it somewhere far far away so she wouldnt click that he owned it
he put it back up forsale soon after...........
never heard of him or the G again :(
haha, i just have this image of you grabbing the keys and sprinting from the desk now with a smile on your face! made the buying process that bit sweeter i suppose.
the wrenching of hard earned cash from between ones fingers?
Thanks, me too
One of them is a one owner. Interesting to see if he still has it.
I'll keep you posted.
