I've had a swing out carrier for some time now and was wondering about fitting it to my 460swb. As I need to replace the rear quarters is it worth getting the panel with the holes, if only for location, or was the carrier only fitted to soft tops in which case the top of the panel will be different?
Secondly when I get the panel off will there be any holes in the box section or will I need to drill and weld in spacer tubes?

Re: spare carrier

I've only ever seen it fitted to cabrios and some of the hardtop military ones with double rear doors.

Re: spare carrier

it was also fitted on the civvie fixed heads with twin rear doors, and i beleive in europe it was an extra cost option.

Re: spare carrier

Just want to make sure I end up with a strong job as I need to modify the carrier to have the same offset as this one to clear the extended filler neck

Re: spare carrier

But if you notice that is a 461 so the filler is in the same place as a 463.

Re: spare carrier

that's my problem. with the extended filler neck and 825x16 tyres it's all a bit tight. I could allways go back to the standard filler but that means using a funel with jerry cans, which as our american friends say is a pain in the arse

Re: spare carrier

whilst we are on the subject do you know what's supporting this side carrier (462) behind the panel

Re: spare carrier

no idea - but have seen them on a few military soft tops so presumably a factory option...

Re: spare carrier

however that last one is a completely different rear carrier.the tailgate has no hinges, it is attached to the carrier, also the lhs quarter panel is extended to let the jerrycan holder fit it.

Re: spare carrier

Mark, do you know if the bolts that hold the carrier at the bottom go through the rear 'box' section or is there some kind of captive nut built in?
Re :- carrier. I've seen this swing out door on cliffs danish 240 too - a very neat solution and must admit it had crossed my mind to coppy this and have a lift up rear window like a toyota LC - possibly more practical for my use giving shelter over rear space and allowing carrying long objects occasionaly

Re: spare carrier

the bottom fixes through the thicker bit that is the sloping bottom bit of the sill, if i remember correctly tyeh were captive, yes, and the bolts that go through the carrier were all socket headed.
if i get the chance i will have a look at my really early lwb twin rear door g.only prob is is that its so rusty the bottom mount dropped off the car!!!
ill have a butchers for you tommorrow, geez!!!!!
