i was wondering if you guys can help :?: my cousin's 300gds 88 model 5 speed has an annoying problem with the gear lever,it seems to have too much play in it when trying to put it in all the gears.i lifted up the leather gaiter but could not see anything unusual but it seems like there is a broken clip or retainer that the gear lever sits in.(the gears go in fine)

is there a part number for what he needs?

i think he is complaining about a whine in the gearbox when decelerating.is this commen with the 5 speed box?

rgds hus.

Re: play in the gear lever.

Huss,
Our 1989 5 speed diesel would have quite a "rubbery" change, this AFTER I renewed the wee bushing on the lever and all the bushings on the linkage. What else is there ?
On the other hand the 1984 4 speed is sweet changing.
Just may be the way they are sir.
Whats this about a RHD 320 CDI then ?

As Marcus said,
change the rubber bushs and clips plus add loads of grease

Re: play in the gear lever.

cheers marcus for reply.yes you are right about the 4 speed ,my cab's 4 speed is much sweeter than the 5 speed.
my cousins box changes fine but the play in the leaver in neutral and when trying to move up or down a gear means that something is broken.

maybe an epc of the 5 speed g/box would help find the problem.

Re: play in the gear lever.

The bushs above go on the linkage and are prone to wear giving very sloppy gear change , to remove the gear stick follow the stick down and if i remember right theres a plastic retaner just unsrew it and the stick will come out and the spring below .
take it apart give it a clean , might help
