The last few days were spent on a road trip through Saudi Arabia and Bahrain, through which we didn't see a single civvy G!

However we did come across an armoured military version at one of the malls. Security was pretty tight everywhere in the Saudi capital, with concrete barriers and armed personnel stationed at most "probable" targets (malls, hotels, ministries), but they don't have a single choice of gun-carrier, we saw Nissan Patrols, Fords, GMCs, and only one G.

It was a pity we were on the move so I couldn't snap a clearer pic, but I first recognised it by the wheels (16-inch ashtaroth), and the bonnet had STEYR stamped on it. Very little of the bodywork is shared by the civilians, and I was going to stop to take a closer look, but I thought the gunner inside might not be so happy to see me approaching!

Maybe our friends with military knowledge can shed some more light on this model...I tried a search for servals and IFAV vehicles but they're not the same.

mark - indeed there are some similarities, though curiosly it lacks the bead-lock wheels

hus55 - wa aleikom essalam! the exhaust looks 463..that's all i can tell from there..and you're right..the pic was taken from a LWB 500..we were lucky to make the 2,600km trip without a hitch.

a common security device spotted in riyadh was the tyre spike..they use them to make sure any car violating a no-entry sign gets a nasty rebuttal..
