Re: CB

You got enougth bits on that dash

Yeah thats the only space I can see for mine...I'm saving the Dash top for a Pajero pod :D
Cumbria is a bit far for a copy!

Hanging on the side, copying ya mail!

(My mate was a big CBer in the late 70's, used to tool around in his 1300 biege Crapi (can you tool a round in one of those?) after school shouting 19 for a copy    I used to hide).

Have you a PA set up on it? I can see that being usefull asking Ramblers politely to stop ignoring the G up thier bum and vacate the path

Re: CB

Yes there is a PA and it is very useful - ramblers, old folk in supermarket car parks, school kids texting in the middle of the road and of course the girlfriend talking to her mates
Also useful for trafic reports from lorry drivers - I've avoided quite a few traffic jams and the occasional speed trap.
You can get an ariel splitter so you only need 1 ariel for both CB and radio ifyou don't want to drill any more holes.
Have fun

Re: CB

Did a 4x4 charity challenge with 20 odd others last week so in preperation I dusted off my old faithful Midland CB and my K40 mag mount . Guess what? It all still works and was a source of endless fun over the weekend.

I mounted to one side of the grab handle on my 463 with foam and cable ties so that it would be secure and removable later.

I just put my pedal to the metal and let my motor totor !

Regards,

Mike

Re: CB

You guys have got to update a little! :D

UHF is the only way to go and if you get the right set you can remove that redundant ashtray and put the head unit right there on the dash. Get one of the great little GME TX3420 units from Oz - the exchange rate has got to work pretty well in your favour. Coupled with a 6db ground plane independent antenna's and you have got a rig worth using. Of course if you are the only one with UHF it will be as useless as t*ts on a bull but if a few of you have UHF you will find it a far more enjoyable experience than your old time CB's

Check out http://www.gme.net.au/land/transceivers/tx3420.php

(now some of you may think I know what I am talking about but the reality is the opposite. Other than telling you you can fit the 3420 head unit on a plate made to fit the ashtray screws, I know nothing!. The technical side of these things escapes me).

Re: CB

I've been looking at uhf for a while - cb has a pretty short range. We could do with 8 or 10 miles and if it would DX too that would be great.
I'm interested to hear your experiences as a user, wether it has t.ts or not is irrelevent  does it do the job?
cheers

Re: CB

BTW for all you CBers there is a unit that has a box you hide away and all the controls on the mic - usefull in africa where they confiscate any radio eqpt. at the border.

Re: CB

UHF does not have terrific range. Your old time single side band CB probably has a better chance at getting distance on its own. UHF relies on there being "repeaters' being strategically placed around the countryside to aid with coverage. Otherwise they are little better than "line of sight" car to car communication. We are fortunate to have a good repeater network in Australia and the UHF is now the rig of choice. The modern units will scan a range of pre-determined channels continuously waiting for a signal. Have user programmable stations which can cover Police, Fire or whatever frequencies and combined with a cheap handheld unit, they are great for winching exercises with one person guiding wheels etc from outside the vehicle. Now for distance and safety in Australia you would also have a HF Radio (often referred to as a Flying Doctor Radio but far more versatile than that). These will cover the whole of Australia but are of course more expensive when combined with a tough self-tuning antenna. Of course a Satellite Phone would also be highly recommended for true 'outback' travel.

If you want more information I am sure that some of the Australian 4wd magazine on-line forums (Overlander, 4wd Monthly etc.) would have articles or Exploroz at http://www.exploroz.com/Default.aspx would also have information on their general information pages or on their forum.

I hope that this helps.

Re: CB

You might try a company called Communication Eleven
I've used them and they have loads of options for ariels.
If you don't mind drilling another hole then the basic 'Springer' is good enough

Re: CB

No, not anymore. You can use the old systems until they wear out.

Re: CB

Hi Kashi,

I know I may be deviating from the theme of this thread but what size engine is in your silver 460? and is it unmodified engine wise?

Thinking of going down the offroad route with a project and starting to search for info and any other help/advise that may be offered.

Thanking you in anticipation.

Mike

Re: CB

My CB is up and running thanks to Chris's link :D .

Only picked up a couple of local boys discussing CB Rigs they had owned  And a "breaker on the side" "copying their mail" called Dave while he was waiting for his curry :?

Me thinks this Kit will only be used with other Off Roaders!
