I have the opportunity to get what I think is a Merc diesel crate engine. Its new. It has alternator, turbo, powersteering pump and air con pump. Never started with all the plastic bungs in the holes to stop crap getting in.

It fits a 463,but is of a S Class W140. What would have to be changed to fit a G is sump ,pump and a few brakets.

Engine code 606.961. 130KW.

Im wondering what they are worth if they come up.

This is the engine that was fitted to the 96-2000 300GDT. It is a 24v 6 cylinder. The engine is good but has electronic fuel injection so you would need to be able to sort that all out.
You would need a suitable g'box t handle 330 nm torque. The G had a 5 speed electronically controlled one.
Also you would need the inlet manifold and bits to suit the G as the s class would probably be different. They had an intercooler fitted so you would need to get one made up. Also the G was not made in rhd so you would need to be sure that the steering column would not obstruct the turbo or exhaust system. It would be a substantial undertaking .

Cost in UK for a mb new engine is £10k I believe exchange. A member of GWOA recently had an insurance co. pick up the tab for a replacement

Arguably the best diesel engine put in the G.... though the only problem in the G is the factory air intake is too low behind the grill. Not good for water crossings...

What kind of economy in fuel consumption do these engines get compared to the older 2 valve per pot diesel engines ?

Some interesting info about 4 valve diesel engines:

Re: 463 diesel crate engine.

I'm getting around 15 l/100km but that is in traffic. AlanMcR is getting around 12.5 l/100km. I've managed to get 11.3 l/100km on the highway before.

I consistently got around 12.5 l/100km on my naturally aspirated 300GD. But it was a SWB compared to a LWB.

Although having said that, on paper the 300 TD engine is marginally more fuel efficient. So I can only conclude that I am making that turbo work compared to the leisurely pace of before..... :D
