Hello all,

I'm a Dubai resident (originally from Hull) who has just bought a 1986 GE army green beautiful G.

It's actually my first ever car. I'm 31 and learnt to drive, quite amazingly, last year, here in the UAE.

I'm not going to lie: I've joined this community because I need help.

I need help with finding out more about this beautiful machine I've purchased. I look at the different gears, and they confuse me. I hear strange rubbing-metal noises in third, and it confuses me. And I just need someone to help me with all the questions I have.

The previous owner doesn't really reply to me. And I can't trust any of the mechanics here. So I simply have no one to ask.

Questions like where should the small gear stick be, when i'm in non-off-road mode? Should it stay on "SA – N", or "SA – N – GA". Should the two knobs just by the side of it be left up, or down?

If I'm in first, and have the wheel turned fully, the G seems to skid/screech its way round. It's like as if I'm in a fast car going round a corner at 100mph. It must have something to do with the differentials?? This sometimes happens in reverse, also.

When I reach a certain speed, the right side of the dash seems to rattle insanely. Is this normal? I realise she's 20 years old.

Is there anywhere I can buy a manual that explains how to drive this particular G?

I hope ya'll don't find this annoying, or cheeky, but I truly love this car. I had to have one. My G was once owned by the Emir of Oman, which is nice. It's a beautiful car. It has the two roof thing. it's just perfect. But I'm feeling a little alone in my quest to find out more about it, and how to drive it.

Any help would be amazing. Many thanks, and I'm happy to be part of the G family.

Raf.

Ok you have it in 4wd. The transfer box lever needs to be over to the left and down for 2wd. I cant remember if that SA or Ga,its so long since I'VE DRIVEN A 460. if you want it 4wd move it forward for 4wd high and over and down for 4wd low box. (you do not need N) If your turning a corner and its skidding its because its in 4wd and the centre diff is locked, this can cause damage if used on the highway in 4WD. The two roof thing is a tropical roof.

Pictures would be good if you can post

PM Mortinson or do a search using his name and manual. At one point he posted a link to manuals.

SA [SA]

S GA

Hopefully your short gear leaver looks like this.

You should be in S (2wd) when you are on any hard surface, road etc. This engages the central diff. Do not drive on any hard surface in any of the other positions.

Move from S up to SA. This is high ratio 4wd. Use this if you are off road.

move across to [SA] (the square brackets are my addition, I have never used this setting and am not sure if it is a setting at all. It is just a means of getting to GA. This is low box 4wd. Only to be used off road again.

I attach picks of the relevant page from the manual. If you download them you can enlarge them.

Have fun.

dan has done you a big favour with that picture of the off road gear positions,it should stop all that scheering when turn circles  dont do that too often as it causes transmision build up and could snap something :!:

i learnt this topic from harald pitchman (4x4abc.com) he knows a thing or two about G.s.

I uploaded the W460 Manual I had here: http://www.pruebas.pieldetoro.net/web/MERCEDES/detalle.php?MANUAL=20

Unfortunately, my W460 was German and so was the manual. But I am sure that you could get an English copy from any of our many frinds.
