G-oing around the world in 17 years
Gunther W Holtorf is in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia with his 300GD.
Has anyone here written/read about his adventures?
Sounds like something most of us can only dream of doing.
I'm going to have a chat/interview with him in a couple of days so if anyone has any questions to pose to him, ask here and I'll see if I can pass them on.
The story up to 2005 is at the link below.

very interesting to hear!
and to do it in an underpowered 300GDL says alot i think.did he have any major breakdowns is my main question?? or did the trusty 617 diesel just shrug off the miles?
i think a filmed documentary would be fascinating to watch.
rgds hus.
great find
can you ask him if he will allow you to do a short video on his trip
Yer man, being an ex DHL or airline senior exec , he sent the whole dammen thing back to Deutchland to be rebuilt at some stage on his travels, I have seen reference to this guy before somewhere, photo of him and the missus sitting in a desert somewhere, anyway, yes ,a basic 617 for absolute reliability, he even had the a/c that had been fitted removed, alledgedly so that there was even less to go wrong, maybe he could not spare the power reqd. to drive it.
Seen in the 25th anni book perhaps?
Cheers
Marcus
I shall research a little to see what prompted me to think thus.

Err ... that's not quite accurate, especially if it's meant to imply the G-Wagen needed a rebuild.
I asked the man about the story and he says "... ah, that ... there's no smoke without fire!"
The car was indeed shipped back to Germany but it was done at the request of Mercedes-Benz for the celebration of the G-Wagen's 25th anniversary.
There was no rebuild.
The mileage was 587,779km as at 1pm, June 13, and it still starts with one turn of the key, and purrs.
