How many times have you had to rescue me then? that one time at Langdale was due to driver, er........navigator error.
You cant have the claim to have pushed me out by hand, I just got going again as you put your hand on to start pushing, and those old tyres of mine were nearly bald, and I took a more difficult line, and I had Brooksy chunnering away next to me, and the centre diff wasnt locked, and, and, and......................

I have-I've spent too much time already under Simons!

I seriously considered a G when deciding to buy my first 4x4. In the end it was a toss up between a G and Deafener , with pro's and cons to either of them.

In the end I went with a 1991, low mileage, mechanically & steelwork sound ex-MOD FFR 110, Simon (SCC28) for pretty similar budgets went the G route but with an older year and with more miles, a month or two after I bought mine. I definitely got lucky-most civilian LR's of similar budget would be in a far worst state than mine which had spent most of its life on an aircraft carrier.

We've both had them pretty much a year now. At our sort of budget levels both of them need work (thankfully we're both mechanical genius'). This to me is the problem with G's-the fact they hold their money (too well?) and parts cost/availability. You have to admit Si that your facing some serious work at some stage just due to the fact yours has higher mileage and is 7 years older (B reg = '84 doesn't it?). My Lanny has needed work also but the thing that swings to LR's favour is availability and cost of parts and spares. I agree though that Merc has the edge in build quality (but obviously at a higher initial cost)

Regarding offroad I believe its swings and roundabouts, axle lockers vs articulation. Yours (Si) has shown itself to be more than capable-but I wouldn’t judge it against 'The Ashton Gang' they are totally clueless offroad as you've seen! "what’s the centre lock for again?" "how do I select it?" " nah hit it faster"
We'll see what mines like, if it gets stuck I'll bang some ARB's in it-that'll shut you up. Bloody diff locks-stop spouting on about em!

It will be interesting to see how things stack up over the next few years in the course of our green laning exploits and our overlanding trips (which is what I initially bought mine for)-which should include either a Morocco or Iceland trip.

For now though I'll let Si continue to be the guinea pig and do all the home and legwork and maybe change my allegiance at a later date. :D

but dont forget when you do eventually fit ARB lockers, then to fit stronger shafts, stronger CV's, stronger diffs and the list goes on, what was you saying about cheap parts  I have a 20 year old broom, its still original, only ever having seven new heads and four new shafts in its life time.
