Urgent 463 300GD Wiring question
Hi all, a small part of my wiring has been tampered with and I have found a run of original disconnected wiring. Does anyone know what the wire colours should be to connect to the temperature sensor with the single pin (one of two) on the cyl head nearest the fan? thanks Tombo
Green according to the manual
I'll use my eyes tomorrow in the light and check it for certain.
What else has been tampered with?
Hi Tombo
I'll attach the relavent pages from the manual wiring section so you can see yourself what should be there or not.
I can follow your description but am left with the question, does the new temp guage work now and have you checked it against a handheld thermometer?
It should be fairly easy to identify original MB wires and the added stuff.
Just one clarification . The second thermocouple (nearer the bulkhead) controls the amount of time the glowplugs remain on after the engine is running. The stay on until the water temp reaches 30c. So both need to be correctly connected for best cold weather operation
Gosh the pitures did come out a bit larger than planned.
If you right click on them and "save target/ picture" to your machine, then you can print using windows standard software.
My G heats up to 100c after any longish hill but normally runs at 85-90 at 70 mph. That's with the 80c thermostat.
Can't recommend any electricians, but it shouldn't be too difficult to trace 2 wires
Hi, Roly, thanks for looking. When I bought the car the only non-original aspect was a remote temp gauge had been fitted (and worked fine) as the cluster temp gauge had become u/s. Despite the fact it is a one owner car they had likely baulked at the MB price, the equiv of circa £700.
Anyway they had connected this to the single pin temp sensor and I belive taken power from the fuse board. When I gave the car to George Fraser (Merc specalist London) for a thorough check, new glow plugs and an all fluid change, he sweetly found and fitted a s/h stock transistor? board for behind the temperature dash gauge from a correct cluster. It works perfectly. So he disconnected much of the non-orig wiring but a loop was left (or inserted) linking the two pin sensor nearer the bulkhead with the single pin. I dont know if this is correct. Then some weeks later whilst studying the engine (diesels are new to me), I found a disconnected single pin at the end of a black wire with a purple line (and white markings along its length but unsure if these are MB). George tells me that it doesn't fit the temp pin but I'm not sure. I dont want to blow the temp gauge so am reticent to do anything until I'm sure. Hence my quandry.
