290 turbo runs hot?
It seems that only the SA 290 turbo diesel owners seem to talk about these engines tending to run hot. I feel I can't use mine anywhere near its abilities because the heat guage gets up to 105 quite quickly.
I've got just over 100 000 km, full service history, clean filters, good injectors, flushed and treated radiator, and thermostat, viscous coupling etc all good.
Does anyone from outside SA have a comment?
What is the design temp. for this engine.
Does the a/c fan also aid engine cooling as there seems to be no correlation between this and the temp guage.
Does anyone know what the water capacity is in the 602 turbo engine Sprinter?
Will an oil cooler help as it has a crazy little heat exchanger throwing heat into the radiator.
Thanks.
If your 290 has the early (not upgraded W124 style) instrument pinacle then you could borrow another temp. gauge to try it on.
Sometimes these gauges don't read right and are also affected by the state of the cable grounding.
Had the same problem once, and was down to the temp. gauge.
we got a 1998 turbo diesel intercooled 461 290GD, it is generally not that hot here in N Ireland , but we were in the South of England last summer 30 to 35 degrees centi, and she only ever run about 85 degrees, not that she was working hard, only tootling to the shops.

Checked that too - thanks
