Vibrating noise from exhaustsilencer!
My exhaustsilencers, especially the first one (under passengerdoor, Right hand side of the veichle) is vibrating with a "kloncky" noise when engine is running on low rpm´s. It sounds like something is loose inside the silencer. I have strapt the silenser up to the chassi to decrese the noise, offcourse resulting in more vibrations in the car.
Its MB original exhaust system in overall good condition..
Is this something somebody else has notised?
Is it possible to replace just the silencers or just take them of to make some adjustments inside them?
Its quite irretating to listen to that when the engine itself sounds like a dream :)
Have a nice weekend all GWOA members!
Maybe it's the engine mounts that have softened that is why the the silencer is moving around more than it should.
I would have said catalytic converter but then I remembered it's a diesel...make sure it is not in the section just after the first silencer, that goes over the chassis rail, as there is an overpipe welded on which can get loose, and give you some strange vibrations. Mine came loose last month and I had it welded back on...
On the 350GD, the section between the chassis rails is supposed to be a straight pipe, only on petrols is it supposed to have a small box there. Some petrolheads (like yours truly) replace the silencer with the straight pipe from the GD for a better sound, but in your case it looks like you have the correct setup.
No probs, was in Sweden last summer and remember seeing one G..looked like a G500, most of the cars in Stockholm were fairly new (esp. the taxis!).
Looks good. Suggest you rotate the clamps so the nuts are facing upwards thereby reducing possibility of damage to the threads when you off road

I´ve checked the section after the first silencer (the one with the vibrating noise) going over the chassie rail and notised that i have a straight pipe instead of a silencer section.
All the mountings to the exchaust system is okay aswell as the engine mounting. (hard to see all but engine does not vibrate).
Guess ill have to talk with my mechanic about it..
Thanks for shown interest!
