Need to replace a back wheel bearing on my 463 SWB, spurred on by scc28's post on the front hub rebuild I am going to give it a go and do both the back ones myself. Is there anything to be aware of before starting the job? and does anybody have the part numbers for the rear wheel bearings please. Will try to take some pics throughout including copious hammering and bloodied knuckles I expect :D

Re: Wheel Bearing Part Numbers

You will need a press to fit the wheel Bearings, if you do not have one then, you need to get your local garage to press these on for you.

Do not have the numbers, but your M/benz dealer should be able to do that for you particulary if you are buying from them, they are very unhelpful otherwise.

If you look in your local yellow pages and go to bearings supplier, they might be able to supply a complete kit for a G-Wagen given all the details.

Be sure to ask if they supply the gaskets and, or seals needed to do the job, M/benz, I think do not sell these seprately any longer. You can get the for approximately half the price.

Thanks Rakesh, I will speak to Merc first and I have a local garage that will be able to press the bearings in for me, It is still driveable just rumbling a bit so will get it sorted this week Cheers Alex

Re: Wheel Bearing Part Numbers

Update I have removed the hub and the shaft with the wheel bearing and the seal on it, that was quite easy just six nuts to remove after the brake drum is removed. Am having trouble finding anybody with a press that is big enough to accomodate the half shaft, apparently needs to be a big press with about 30 ton pressure , does anybody know where to get this done I don't think the merc garage will even be geared up for this (although they will probably give it a go and f**k it up :D ) Found a good site with all the part numbers for the front hub rebuild parts for 463 and some advice on bearings ie don't use Timkins as they are French and badly made (no surprise there then) 4x4abc

Re: Wheel Bearing Part Numbers

Problem solved, The 463 wheel bearing is fitted with a big nut instead of a welding torch and alot of hassle. This is good news as I can do the whole job myself now and have ordered the parts, not so good if you have a 460 so remember you will need a good mechanic with a hydraulic press and takes about 90 mins per side just to get the bearing off and new one put on.
