yes, sump is different, and the oil filter housing, and I think the water pump but other than that, cheap if you can get you hands on it, and will be faster than your G 230 engine. sweet engine that 230, go on forever.

Re: new 230 engine..

is it worth just doing my head gasket peter?, been quoted silly prices from 600 to 900. thats why the engine looked a good option. fancy having a go myself but just worried in case i order wrong stuff etc and all the things like do i have to get the head skimmed etc

Hi its got the wrong flywheel and people will tell you that the flywheel needs to be balanced at the factory..since there are no locating pegs and the bolt holes are equally spaced there are many options to fit it "out of balance" also I remember something about the starter of the auto engine not fitting the G'...much more aggro than a just head gasket if your not mechanically minded

Doing a head gasket is not so difficult. You have just done the front swivel hubs so a head is no more tricky. Just take your time and note where things go before ripping it apart. Dig cameras make reassembly more straight forward.
I suggest no more difficult to do a head gasket than a swap to a non G 230
