463 300GES Fuel Consumption
My appologises to member owner who requested information on fuel consumption on his vehicle.
Without going into too much details about my difficulties, I have got the information and calculated the conversations requested.
Before I loose these, I might as well post the information on the forum, in that way I can assure safety from loss.
Fuel consumption is 13.4 L/100Km @ 90Km/h, 17.7 L/100Km @ 120Km/h and 18.7 L/100Km @ an urban cycle. If my conversation calculations are correct, then this in imperial reads, 21.5 mpg @ 56mph, 16.07 mpg @ 75 mph and 15.21 mpg on the urban cycle.
Regards,
those numbers back up my real world experience with mine too :)
Hi All,
Mine consumes 1 lt / 4 kms. 103 Engine , G300 ,1996 model, weighs 3300 kgs.

Your figures correlate with mine.

That is 25 l/100 km. Which is exceptionally high.... something is certainly wrong if that is what you are getting.

Not quite, IMO. It's a very heavy armoured G with a relatively low power engine. Quite possible, I'd say....

that is exactly what i'm getting with the standard long 300 with M103 engine.
and that seems to be about average for the 300GEL here in jakarta
a lot of people are doing even worse because get get stuck in traffic for hours everyday
must be the fuel quality or something in the air.. :(
As Rakesh pointed out, 18.7 litres/100 Km (15 MPG Imp or 12.6 MPG US) is the city driving figure achieved contemporarily by MB when the G was launched. In my experience, this is quite accurate provided that you don't get permanently stuck in city traffic. Furthermore, I'd say that fuel consumption in Jakarta must necessarly be better than in Northern Europe because it takes less time for the engine to reach its optimum temperature.
My experience is that I can get a fuel consumption in summer is 8% better than the one achieved in winter (given other conditions as similar as possible), just because where I live one can frequently experience temperatures well below 0 °C (32 °F) in January and well over 40 °C (104 °F) in July.
But as you said, if you sit permanently in traffic jams then fuel consumption can be much worse....
Mine is a heavy vehicle(3.3 tons) and i do get stuck in traffic on a daily basis.
What could be done to reduce the consumption?

apart from throwing away the weights, nothing afaik
i'd be interested to know if there's a way to save on gas money as well
Predicitive driving is the easiest - I've actually managed to get my G down to the recommended urban fuel consumption living in central London. Used to be about 30-40% above... of course the cold weather may scutter all that.
You could also look at an alternative fuel? LPG, Ethanol....
Lpg does not exist here in Kenya. However expensive fuel is, i love this monster..

Volkan, I am curious. How did you end up owning an armoured G? Do you need it to be armoured? I am asking because they normally cost an arm and a leg....
Well, I ve been carjacked last september by 3 tugs , all with ek47 s . This car was brought into Kenya by Turkish Embassy in 1996 (they paid 250.000 usd for it) I purchased it from them at 10.000 usd.Changed the engine and spent some more to get it fixed.
Thats how i ended up with it.

not a bad price - armoured Gs still command a lot of money.
sorry i didn't realise it was armoured when i made my 25 l/100km comment.
also i didn't realise that the 300GE LWB had such bad fuel economy but i just checked Arnd's website and it says it is 19.9 l/100 km urban for a non-armoured one.
ouch is all i can say. even in London traffic i sit around 15k l/100km

That is a gift by any standards! What year is it? I would love to have a few quality pictures of it if oyu could e-mail them to me!
Cheers

that explains a lot, doesn't it?
when they say 20 l/100 km, it probably means about 25 l/100km in today's real life bad traffic
volkan,
that's quite a story for your grandchildren someday..
i can't imagine being carjacked with 3 AK-47s
if that happens where i live, i'd be driving around an armored vehicle myself (with my own uzi inside my driver's door pocket, off course) :)
ah... the world we live in today :(
Hi Again,
I am sure this has been discussed before in the forum and sorry to waste your time.
The weather in nairobi is around 30c during the day and 15c during the night. Which engine oil would be ideal for my g ? Still overheating while on heavy traffic.
Thanks and regards,
Volkan

A good-quality semi-synthetic oil of any of these grades: 10W40, 15W40, 15W50 will most certainly do. Don't use a full synthetic because they're probably too thin for your engine.
