Very crafty guy.... he is attempting to sell an used roof for twice the money you would have paid when it was new! and yet he cannot guarantee that all the parts needed to fit it are there!
Only in the G's world....
could you go into a bit of info about these morty? just curious
anyone after a tropical roof is better off ripping the one off johnnyboy's 280gel that he wants to break
that way at least johnnyboy will be happy too
Question is, is it available any more from the parts bin, and at what cost.
I suppose this is the same as the double-roof option on LWB 460s of old, but with the addition of cut-outs for the roof rack mounting.
I understand the concept behind it is the first layer of roof takes most of the sun's heat, and the air layer between it and the "real" roof thus stays cooler (also thru the air running between them when the car moves).
wouldnt it be wiser to just fit a roof rack in stainless or cover it with some sort of thermal heat barrier
says the man from the hot country????

There's not much to say. The tropical roof (D33) was offered as an option on both the W460 and the early W463. Also possibly on early 461s though I cannot confirm this. It was discontinued sometiem during the mid-nineties, possibly due to lack of demand.
I say this because I have seen just a handful of Gs fittd with the tropical roof, and all of them were 460s. I have seen just one in the flesh, of which I am attaching some pictures.
As you can see in the pictures, the tropical roof was nothing more than a double roof painted white, so that it would reflex most of the sun's radiation. An air chamber would be provided between both roofs to act as thermal insulator. Very simple, but, unfortunately, Mercedes did not invent anything here. Tropical roofs have been extremely popular in Spain, beacuse they were standard in all Spanish market Land Rover Santanas, at at time when an aircon was never offered (not even as a option).
The problem is that it wasn't particularly cheap to order your G with this option, at more than DM 1,000 or €500 a piece.
Would have to put a post it note on the sunroof switch to remind not to tilt it up straight into the metal :D

Not a problem... if you look at the excerpt of the 1991 German price list above you will see that it reads "(nich i.V. mit Schiebehebedach), which means that cannot be ordered in connection with sunroof.
These krauts! they think about everything!
I saw a G in France with an extended roof on it. I have also seen a pic of the same thing somewhere else. It looks like the roof has been raised by about 3" above the gutter that runs around the top of the vehicle. Anyone got an idea what that is about?
cheers morty, i am now wiser already today.
as four huss' comment, the problem with making the gap too large i think is that convection air currents occur more and it wouldnt insulate. this is why double glazing is always a common gap, and why some secondary glazing is not as effective as the gap is too large.
Tom
The guy has returned to sanity and has lowered the strarting price accordingly: http://cgi.ebay.de/Mercedes-G-GE-GD-W460-W463-TROPENDACH-lang-Zubehoer_W...
get a good roof rack instead from tbr or orc
it will do a similar job in keeping down heat and also be alot more useful.
i intend fitting a roof rack to G in n-cyprus now the hardtop is on.it will keep the heat down alot i hope.....watch this space, pix to follow :D
