Wine Red Paint?

Hi. I'm a newcomer to G ownership (but not to MB ownership), having just bought a 1988 280GEL. It needs a bit of work and that will involve the application of some paint.

I haven't got the data card and I've broken my good specs so looking under the bonnet for the code was no good either. The Russian VIN decoder says 3558 Wine Red. The local paint firm denied knowledge of this so I rang my local MB parts dept. They also found code 3558 from the VIN, but they couldn't find that as a valid code anywhere else.

They did find a reference to code 3005 for wine red but their system showed that to be unavailable. I rang the paint people back and the guy there recognised 3005 as the standard RAL colour code for wine red, so I took the vehicle along to compare with their swatch, and it looks a pretty good match. However, before I go shelling out on a couple of aerosol cans, does anyone know the real story here - and whether I will actually find RAL3005 to be a match?

No doubt many more questions will follow. I'm compiling a list of things that need looking at, but I shall wait until I have an owner's manual, workshop manual and wiring diagram before pestering you further.

PS. If the Land Rover Series 2 avatar is regarded as offensive round here, let me know and I'll change it

It should but it probably won't match exactly - don't forget your paint is nearly 20 years old! It will have faded with time and the elements.

Re: Wine Red Paint?

Code 3558 is definitely "Wine Red" (see attached). But no wonder that they could not find it at MB because it does not appear in the EPC (don't know why).

However, code 3005 is not wine red but "Bordeaux Red" and this one appears as such in the Mercedes EPC.

As for your avatar, we will forgive you this time. Pity that the attached cannot be reduced to something distinguishable to be used as an avatar.

Re: Wine Red Paint?

Thanks for the Glasurit thing. I did a search for Mercedes code 3005 on there and it came up blank, so there's clearly something very strange going on. And why on earth wouldn't a Merc colour be in the EPC?

I'm going to buy the RAL3005 and give it a try. The worst that can happen is that I've wasted some money. It wouldn't be the first time.

LOL re the bottom pic. I'm certainly not going to pretend that leaf springs and non-locking diffs on a '64 Landy could compete with a G, but I am very fond of t'owd lass!
