Hallo there !

Seems you are in the north (edited) of Cyprus (Lapithos). I'm on the south in Nicosia.

From the picture, your G looks like a 460 and seems to be in mint condition.

I've attached a picture of my G, which I try to keep in excellent condition.

Regards,

Alexis

Re: Another cypriot member!

Hallo again !

I didn't know you were Turkish (I suppose Turkish Cypriot) as your location says Romford. We fled Varosi during the ((edited)) and I'm living in Nicosia.

Anyway, there are a number of G's here but most of them are early 460's as the import duties for 4x4 were increased in 1985. There are 5 or 6 463's most up to 1991 and one imported 2nd hand from 1996.

There is a good following for the G, and most, if not all cars imported, are still on the road and in fair to excellent condition. Most of them were purchased new while the others were imported 2nd hand from the UK. A handfull were ex-UN. I know several owners and cars.

My car was bought new in 1983 and it's in my family since.

Regarding the Turbo conversion, I basically had four choices. Replace the engine with 280 petrol, a 617A from US, a 602 2.9L, or use the STT conversion. The petrol engine transplant was going to require several modifications, the 602 engine major surgery and the 617A would not mate to my Auto gearbox. So I went for the STT on the original engine which provides much improved performance and driveability.

Here at MB Cyprus, we did three conversions on a 460 to the 602 engine which were expensive, and honestly not worth it. One guy tried to put a 603 engine with no success.

Temperature is a problem mainly because of the high gearing, that is why I decided to fit 235/85 tyres on mine. Otherwise the car has been used a lot and hard.

We keep in touch... If you find yourself in Nicosia, I'm at the Mercedes-Benz importers. There is only one Alexis here, and I'd love to have a chance to meet with you.

P.S. Don't know your name ... and apologies to the Forum administrator for the huge picture.

Guys,

I've just bought a place in Droushia and was going to drive from the UK to leave my G in Cyprus. On the way to Paphos airport I noticed a G for sale in a garage on a roundabout. It was the evening so I didn't check it out. Do you know of any for sale in the area?

Cheers

Daley goodmorning !

The used G you are referring to, is a 460 and was imported second hand from the UK many years ago. I believe it's on the junction as you enter Paphos from the motorway.

You'll find very few used G's here although, if you are interested I know of a friend you wants to sell his 1985 280GE long. He wants to get the latest 463 regardless of the steering position. That would be his 4th G.

Welcome to the forum Alexis, I will be visiting Greece in my 463 next summer so nice to know there are some knowledgeable people in the area if I have a major breakdown. I do not fly when I go on holiday so will be clocking up some major mileage on the G (driven to Spain and Portugal before) I used to work on Alonnisos island in the Sporades so I have many friends there that will be nice to see them again. Best regards Alex (Draxey)

Re: Another cypriot member!

HI alexis, now i have solved who you are :!: :!:

when my brother first started crossing the border to find jeep spares he met that dealer cypriot dealer that sourced him all his parts for his wrangler.
well, they became very good friends, he always looked after my brother very well(i will find out his name and address, maybe you know him)
one day, a few years ago i asked my brother" mehmet, are there any G's in the south :?: "

"i dont know,i will ask my friend the jeep specialist"...he said.
well a few weeks later he rang me and said" hus, there is one in nicosia it belongs to a young feelow that works for mb nicosia :!: :!: "

i said, wow! it must be the only one in the south.

well i guess it must have been you that they were talking about

Re: Another cypriot member!

Well Hussein, a few years ago at MB we had 5 G-wagens.

One was mine, the other was a 1981 300GD with a 602 conversion (which the new owner managed to totaly neglect), and the other three were 1982 300GD LWB.

Now it's only me, the panel-shop managers' excellent 300GD LWB and a traded-in 240GD (with a 602 conversion) used by our on-site service team (they also go to quarries for service).

you have a great area for off roading where many of your local off roaders go....i think it begins with P.... but i'm not sure, could be wrong, but the scenery is meant to be unreal.

Re: Another cypriot member!

Hussein, the area that is very popular for off-roading is Akamas peninsula which is on the East side of the island after Latsi (which is after Polis).

Tha Akamas beaches is where the turtles come out to lay their eggs in the sand.

There is a very steep path right at the peak of the island in an area called Fontana Amorosa. That is a very beautiful place. There was also a ship wreck there leaning on the rocks but there's not much left of it now.

I've been to the north twice a few weeks after they allowed us to cross (believe it was in April 2003). I wet to Pentayia, where I stayed before 1974 with my uncle who was a doctor at the mining hospital, to Elia and tried to go to Petra which is an enclosed military area. Then to Kyrenia and Varosi and walked to the fences of the ghost town. I've never been back since.

the world is small alexis.my cousins mum and his wife are from that village (elye/elia) originally and still live there.they are in terms of farming and land the richest turks of that village.they new many greek cypriots.
my dads sister and husband also live there and my he speaks better greek than you guys i promise. :!:

as for my dads village lapta where he was born, the stories are endless.

Re: Another cypriot member!

Please find below a link with many pictures from Akamas.

http://www.imagesofcyprus.com/EN/gallery/Akamas

As for clubs, there is one called KOFA which is for 4x4 rallying/competition. As far as I know it hasn't been very active for some time now. When it was very active it used to be dominated by Suzuki SJ's and Vitaras with a few Ssangyong Korandos (the Jeep lookalike) and Land-Rover. Noone dared put his beloved G in this kind of competition.

I think they still do some off-road (family type) excursions. If I find more I'll let you know.

and on the subject of Cyprus ... my uncle (who was for many years at the Pentayia hospital up to July 1974) must have given birth to most babies in the area.

hello alexis,i have a question for you.

i have heard from my brother who lives in n-cyprus,that the government in the south plans on providing lpg at the petrol stations so as to be upto date with the eu standards....is this true :?:

if truedo you have any idea on the price :?

Re: Another cypriot member!

Hussein hello !

We have no information on availability of LPG, and therefore no pricing.

There is no demand as noone is even requesting LPG.

If the government is going to ask for it, it would be only to satisfy EU requirements.

If I find anything more I'll let you know.

Also with regards to Daley's question, I'll do a little research and come back to you ...

Black / Black chequered cloth
Alloy wheels wide w/ extended wheelarches

Seller said it had some rust spots which he fixed.

Shakir,

There is a 1985 280GE LWB Automatic which I've seen. It is original and, as far as I know, unmolested. Colour is White with black chequered original Recaro trim. It has factory A/C and wide alloys.

Owner is interested to sell but is usually high on the asking price.

Coming back to your question on LPG in Cyprus, the government announced today plans to introduce it. The timeframe is not given.

If you can read Greek, the relevant story is today on http://www.politis.com.cy/cgibin/hweb?-A=704266&-V=articles&-p

That is fantastic news for us , Alexis. Me and Huss both use the magic juice LPG or GPL as it is known in Europe. Now that means, carry on modifying the 280 engine. and it is going to be much better than a diesel conversion. At least at the moment.
Last week I had a stainless exhaust fitted. Phew. What a difference on performance and a lovely roar too as well. Do they fabricate stainleess exhausts in Cyprus at all ? I have some ideas for the next time I drive there.

Headline : LP much cheaper than petrol

Road & Transport Authority of the Cyprus Government announced that it is preparing the ground for LPG introduction
Now paying unleaded 95 at 53 cents while with LPG 30 cents
Same fuel consumption, small reduction in engine output but at 40% cheaper fuel
Estimated cost of conversion at 450 CYP for carburator engines and 750 CYP for injection. Conversion can be removed and used on another vehicle
Option of using either LPG or petrol to run vehicle
It's safe
An exmple given shows CO2 reduction of 27%, no emissions of other dangerous substances, reduced exhaust particles

I have looked into turbo charging in the north, but they are not specialists in that field.

Re: Another cypriot member!

Yiasou Hussein !

The conversion was carried out at our Mercedes workshop in Nicosia.

The difficult part was the tuning of the engine, diesel pump and auto gearbox adjustments according to the STT instructions. Otherwise the kit is so well excuted, you can do all other installation yourself.

They seem to have a conversion for the 603 engine also, but it's for the the W124 and not the 463. This means that you'll be fabricating your own attachment parts and experimenting on such things as hose routing and intercooler installation and airbox conversion.

I'm curious to see your 603 conversion cause s far as I know it is difficult to squeeze the 603 engine in the 460 engine bay. I've seen such a conversion and I didn't much like it cause the engine mounts were moved backwards, the sump was very close to the front differential housing and there was no space for the visco fan.

The most common conversion on the 460 is the 602 engine (Turbo or not) with an intercooler conversion as retrofitted on the SSangyong Korando/Musso.
