funny noise
I have an intermitent whine from the rear axle area. The whine is only audiable when power is transmitted through the driveshaft ( this can be at very light throttle openings ) and disappears as soon as you come off the throttle. If you hold a constant light throttle in say 2nd gear the whine will stay at a certain pitch, then change to a lower pitch :? No noise when coasting. The noise not intrusive, but louder than tyre noise.
On a quick trip to the tip today, intitial mile or so no noise .... then whine. Return trip started with the whine ... whine disappeared when I got near home :?
Maybe the car doesn't like to leave home :D
I have not checked the oil level in the rear diff yet.
this could be the small in between axel that has movement in it.
Or it could be the high-low gearbox is used on the highway and is worendown.
I hope you unterstand me
very difficult to diagnose from a distance......items that can cause whine start with wheel bearings. oil levels.crown wheel and pinion wear.gearbox / transfer box bearings.the fact that it varies in tone and frequency would bias it towards axle bearings......or low oil somewhere in the drive train...does the note change when you turn the steering wheel slightly left to right under power and off power??? in left hand bends or right hand bends?1st gear 2nd gear drive.and reverse? uphill or down hill?the fact that it goes away on the overrun ..offload would indicate diff bearings or wear.
are the diff locks operating correctly???
The diff locks can take a minute or so to come on if they are not used very often. If they are being stubborn then sometimes swerving back and fourth or turning circles will help them to engage quicker.
Just make sure you are doing it on a loose or slippery surface!!!
And yes Huss that would be normal, sometimes even have to reverse a little to take the "load" off the cogs to allow to disengage, ditto for engagment as Tim points out, sometimes necessary to steer a little to line cogs up in diff to allow them to engage.

if the noise is from the rear of the vehicle it is wear in the crown wheel and pinion...as you move the throttle from accelerate to decelarate in fourth or fifth gear at 30/40mph is there a lag in between (backlash) indicating that the mating surfaces of the crown wheel and pinion are out of tolerance.....in a previous post I suggested drain the diff oils into a clear jar leave to settle and look for grey sediment or metal particles.magnetic drain plugs will collect ferrous metal particles...put your little finger into the drain plug hole and wipe it round the inside bottom of the diff housing...look out for sharp edges on the thread....any grey paste like goo is indication of worn parts......I have known of broken half shafts causing strange noises and with permanent 4 wheel drive the break is not obvious.....
failure is very far away if the oil is clean....take it for a drive (30/40miles )to get the oil hot and undo the fill bung on the side of the diff first then the bottom one ...drain and check for sediment or particles... if clean replace bottom drain bung and fill to capacity with hypoid 90...if dirty flush with petrol then fill as above...if any metal buy a magnetic bung to stop metal particles moving in the oil through the teeth of the crown wheel and pinion
look for the obvious first.big chunky tyres not inflated equally can load one halfshaft more than the other.... this is why you cannot run different diameter tyres on the front and back axles with permanent 4 wheel drive

Well said. It is like those 4x4 owner who fit 4 big chunky tyres to their truck and then leave the original spare... which is automatically rendered useless unless yiou wnat to screw up the differential of the axle you fit the spare having the two wheels in that axle such a different diameter.
People should check their pressures more often!
just had the G over the pit at the garage down the road and all the levels in bothe fr & r diffs + the transfer box & gear box are fine.
Think I'll take her for a longish run as this noise has only appeared since doing the 5 mile run into the local village.
