Just a question someone may be able to answer. It would appear that all VG 080 transfer cases do not share the same ratio. Early 460 seem most to be .8/10 yet 461 can be 1.050/1.... Or so it seems in the MB data I have here. Does this mean you can buy the gears and interchange them?

Re: VG 080 Ratios

Yes you can but it will not be cheap.
You also have to consider the power out put, wheel diameters, speedo drive ratio to understand effects of playing with these ratios, the whole gearbox band can change affecting shifting points in relation to speed and alter fuel consumption drasticaly.
Unless you understand these changes (I do not either) don't go there.

Re: VG 080 Ratios

I may be telling you something you already Know. But the ratios for the 290 are as follows

From the engine

Auto Gearbox

Ratio

1st gear 3.87
2nd gear 2.25
3rd gear 1.44
4th gear 1.0

The gear box is the same as the early 463 models (type 77.2)

Transfer case VG080

1.000 Road gear
2.143 Off road

Rear axle

3.73

Max speed at 3980 rpm 137klm

As for changing diff gear, well it has been done by members in the club but it is not easy and requires specialist tools which the member borrowed from his dealer.

463 Autoboxs are about if your interested.
