advice on a fair price for E reg 280GE
Hello, I'm new to the GWOA - infact I'm not an owner...yet. I've driven a '85 Merc200t for the past 7/8 years which although well-loved is now beginning to get a bit too tatty and the timing chain may be on the way out. So after years of being interested in GWagens I might now actually be in the market. Luckily it coincides with a good friend of mine wanting to sell his 280GE (immigrating). This is where I need some advice. The Wagen in question has been owned by my friend Winston for the last 8/9 years, regularly serviced, recon engined fitted last year, with new petrol tank and fuel lines. front bearings and bushes replaced for last MOT. Auto, never taken off-road, 9 seater, driven by his wife and for family holidays etc. Previous owner was disabled so to the left of the brake peddle a bar has been fitted to the throttle pedal to enable left foot driving! (can be seen in interior shot). Overall the body work is fairly good other than some surface bubbles around the rear lights and front wing above the plastic trim. The interior is in need of a good clean (8 years of 2 kids) but the drivers seat base has a largish tear. My only reservations are fuel consumption! I'd really like to fit LPG. And the interior being a tad 'agricultural' for my wife (who's got used to the luxury of the merc estate!). My question is - what's a fair price? I'll try and upload some pics.
Hi welcome to GWOA ....lpg could cost around £1200 so the host vehicle needs to be good all round or cheap to compensate.look for worn out wiper spindles/water under the carpets... not an mot item but a lot of hassle to cure and a good lever for cheapening the deal GBP 2500 to GBP 3000 would be top money without the grief.... you are the best judge and the wife might not like the new horizons and parking navigation minima you get with a long G' rgds
Hi rust around the screen can cause leaks.you need to lift the carpet to find out or look for rust streaks in the corners of the windscreen surround... other points are loose front hubs..rock the wheels from the top of the tyre....leaking fuel tank when full.....steering wobble at 40/50 mph....bubbling rust on the lower rear panels and bottom of the rear door (inside)....engine smoke (blue) on the overrun when engine hot.....all above are expensive to fix if you are not a "hands on" capable person.rgds
thanks fixwin - I'll check the front floors next time - it was pouring with rain today (as you can see from the pics) and there were no signs of leaks or damp patches. there is a bit of rust on the bottom corners front screen, so that might need re-sealing?
