Hi
We bought our SWB GE about 6 years ago at an auction. Knowing little about mechanic-ing it was a leap of faith, but it turned out very well. Especially as there is so much knowledge and helpfulness within the GWOA [perhaps sensibly, we joined soon after getting our 'G'].
As an expensive hobby we run The Bradford Soup Run [caring for the homeless in Bradford] and we needed a vehicle which would always get us to where we needed to be, whatever the conditions.
Now, though, and despite government edicts to the contrary, we are busier than ever and needing to transport more food, clothing and bedding. So, in the next few weeks we'll be looking for a long wheelbase vehicle. As you may surmise, we're not awash with dosh but needs must when the devil drives! We'll be happy to p/x our existing vehicle [now about 23 years old, the usual paint problems around the back end, drives well and with a new MOT] and it would probably suit someone who's always fancied the idea of owning one and has the time to turn it into what he/she would wish.
We know our limitations: Working on engines and vehicles generally are not what we're good at. Helping people to help themselves... well, that's a different matter.
Some day soon we'll have to make the final decision on whether to stay with 'G's or go for something else [my colleagues want me to get a Landrover - shame on them!] so if anyone out there in 'G' Land can offer helpful suggestions which will help me persuade them otherwise, I'm all ears.
Sorry to waffle on at such length, but at least you now know a bit more about how vital and useful our 'G' has been to both us and those who have little.
Enough!
Cheers,
John
Hi Try Mervyn or Jeff at the G CLASS CENTRE who are big in the cheaper end of the market...unless you want a NON dealer vehicle.a few specifics would help ie petrol ..petrol/lpg...diesel...auto / manual... cloth /carpet interior or washable Mtex/rubber...Five or Nine seats.. lots of history or just a good clean vehicle...a model 460 LWB could cost from GBP 2000 to GBP 11500...a model 463 from GBP 6500 to GBP 45000...... what's your budget and choice??? your tradein value would be relative to what you spend...rgds
Hi Look at fillan in 'Gs for sale' in this forum
Hi it will be hard to find a LWB G' "ready to go" for GBP 2000 + unless your 230ge is in very good cndtn..not many people want to trade down and the 230ge is good for the LPG conversion but only if low mileage and with good records. watch Ebay and Autotrader over the next few weeks...and the forum of course...
John, What you need is an early to mid-eighties 300GD LWB 4-speed manual. Totally reliable and not so very sought after as the 5-speed. With a bit of patience, you'll get one with the cash you have. You can then ebay the 230.
As for convincing your "associates", ask them to find anyone who makes a living off breaking G's for parts. There are loads of people and companies who do though off land rovers. Speaks volumes.
hi jaytee,
3000 budget wow that is tight!! i doubt you will get a decent g wagon in that price range
or will you?...........................
well ill get the smoke signal machine going and ill see what happens!!!
never lose faith in the colour of the sky!
hi john, welcome to the club!tread lightly and think twice before any decision and act only once or you could end up spending more. The GWOA is a brilliant place to be BUT ask as many questions as possible to the most active members, preferably pm them..then you will learn more in general.
As for whats available, lots if your not in a hurry!merv and jeff are top dollar and you can always ask area reps who are like EAGLES!!
I was offered a 300 GD LWB on an A plate, wrong colour and not what i was looking for how much? £2500!!!!!you would have snatched it i'm sure(but i have what i want now, despite being totally messed around by another member!!!! no names mentioned)
Do you know Bill Moss?If not find him and konw him as he knows his G's!!!
JAytee, I have pm'd you
Hi the G wagon section of autotrader has a trader from buckinghamshire offering a LWB petrol at £ 3495 might be worth a follow up rgds
Hi the vehicle is in Chesham... you might try asking the GWOA Midlands Rep Howard Green
if he would have a look at it for you !!! his phone No is 01 295 811459 my thoughts would be "subject to condition" to offer about £ 1800 to swop your 230e rgds
i live about 15mins from chesham if you want me to give it the once over. im not as skilled as Howard, but i know what to look for and if its a bag of faeces!
Hi as long as your interests are being looked after good luck and happy hunting...
Hi look at "twodogs" in Gs For Sale that would be a very good buy.... if you cld trade your 230 back to him to reduce the capital cost rgds
Make that FOUR.
Marcus
Hi fixwin,
Thanks for the helpful suggestions [those who were in any doubt about our technical abilities will quickly understand we {perhaps shamefacedly} know little about the vehicle we drive. We are sure, though, that we like 'G's].
The 'G' referred to in fillan's post looks excellent. Unfortunately, the price matches the excellence.
So, to answer your questions [as best as we can]:
1. LWB required.
2. Manual
3. So long as the front is relatively comfy, not bothered too much about carpets etc for the rear.
4. Probably diesel might be cheaper [so I'm told]. Failing that, petrol.
5. Not bothered too much about in car entertainment [so long as I can hear BBC R4, I'm OK {saddo?!}]
6. 5 seats should leave enough space for food and clothing etc - especially if the rear seats can fold down.
7. Yes, it needs to look reasonable - but it must be understood we'll have to pay for any mechanical/garage work needed as we neither have the time nor expertise to do the work ourselves.
8. It's unlikely we'll do any off-roading - although we have been known to go where vehicles shouldn't to ensure we can get to our Soup Run on time [Sshhh].
9. Cost? Well, we could probably stretch to £2K + ours in p/x. I know it's not much in 'G' terms, but then we haven't got much dosh and we will never [repeat, never] go into debt - we know what it's like to be always playing 'catch-up' and don't want to go there.
In conclusion, I'd really appreciate any help before we venture into the marketplace.
As to whether or not we'd be better off with a specific model, we simply don't know and are largely in the hands of GWOA members for guidance. [We'll try to not blame anyone if they get a suggestion wrong - it will undoubtedly be better than anything we could come up with!]
Cheers,
John
