Single battlefield fuel
Mervyn mentioned that the 270 CDI will run on avation kerosone = JP-8
But apparently there a few "wee" differences to heating oil
Seehttp://www.quartermaster.army.mil/OQMG/professional_bulletin/1997/Autumn/singlefuel.html
But anyway, in essence JP-8 knackers "rotary high pressure injection pumps"
However
Steps are being taken to modify existing injection pumps and the procurment process/specification for diesel vehicles is being changed.
Or words to that effect.
and also
Fuel is a key concern,†said Matthews, explaining that the Army has investigated the use of alternative exotic fuel sources, including hydrogen and nuclear power — both of which pose severe logistics and safety problems. JP-8 diesel fuel, she said, is the primary source of fuel on the battlefield for the near future.
“We have a DoD directive to use JP-8 diesel fuels,†said Matthews. “We have to take advances and apply them to using JP-8.Ââ€

It admits that the current single fuel policy is not working, rotary high presurre pumps are only lasting a couple of thousand miles on JP-8
BUT common rail is Ok

with vehicles having a short life expectancy with the MOD, ill fuel pumps are not to much of a prob as the vehicles are either blown up, shot to bits or disposed of before the fuel pump problem manifests itself.
Also, the reason that particular fuel is used is because it is readily available at most MOD opperational areas.
As the fuel is cheaper than road fuels, the tax payer in any part of the UK is getting value for money for once.
