Hello all ... noobie with a VIN question
I have a 1979 Puch 230GE and would like to find out the details of the VIN. Unfortunately, the Russian VIN decoder site only works with VIN's dated 1980 and on. Can anyone help?
VIN: 46021017002799
Many thanks.
Martin
Hi Martin,
Unable to help but curious, your 1979 Puch must be one of the very first "G" Wagens ?
Marcus
Good morning!
The only information that i can find on your car is as follows.
type 230G244-4
engine no 115973 10 001306
transmission 711200 10 121067
transfer cxase 750600 10 03052
cab 460512 10
steering 760206 10 9465
front axle 730301
rear axle 741503 17 503220
order number 6 9 597 00261
This is from the data card for the chassis number quoted & gives the numbers for the original build.
It may be worth contacting a guy calling himself mortinson who is so i am told the self confessed god of the G-Class.
As i say, that is what i am told.
Good luck with your car & welcome to the facinating world of the G-Class.

Well, if that is so, you have been told wrongly for I am a self-confessed adict to all things G but not a god.
In any event, attached is the datacard of Kalena's G. Something that looks not quite correct to me is the fact that all Puch Gs have VINs with the following syntax (example):
VAG46021017902799
So there should be a 9 rather than a 0 following the LHD code (17) and before the serial number.
If you want to decode the equipment codes, you can find them in this page:
http://www.mercedesmania.com/mbcodes8.html
As I said, I might be very wrong but I think that being your G a very early unit, it can only be a Mercedes re-badged as a Puch. Judging by the VIN, your G was manufactured in early 1980 (possibly in January 1980) which is when Mercedes reached that serial number. Puch Gs only reached your VIN in the first quarter of 1984. Perhaps some pictures of the inerior and exterior of your G would tell us the truth behind this questions.
Well it looks like it's definitly a Puch.
Maybe if your G was imported to USA it was falsely declared a 1980 to avoid import taxes or some other rule of law. It may well be a 1984.
can we have some pictures of your truck posted on here, interested to see it.
As I said, there is something extraordinary about that VIN. If it were a genuine Puch, it should have had a VIN starting with VAG rather than WDB and a "9" just next to the "17". Additionally, if that were a genuine Puch serial number, the truck should have been manufactured in the first quarter of 1984, something that is unlikely given that by then the 230G had been superseded by the 230GE in the civilian market. Something that gives credit to an early manufacture date is the fact that the maker is declared as being the GFG, which was superseded by Mercedes-Benz and Steyr-Daimler-Puch in 1981.
I attach an example of the VIN plate of a military Puch made in late 1989.
My opinion is that this G was made as a Mercedes and then changed to be marketed by Puch with Puch badges before it left the factory. There´s something untoward under the engraving of the code type 460.2 in the VIN plate of your G, as if there it was the VAG code that has been obscured by the engraving. But though being a Puch it seems to have Mercedes VIN number.
As I said, I would like to see pictures of your G...
Cheers
Hi,
Intreguing or what.
How come the WDB suffix is bringing up a Steyr Puch dealer then ?
Marcus
Anything in particular?
Pictures of the interior specially of the dashboard and controls will be most revealing, but send also some of the exterior.
Thanks
Oh,
And photos of the wheelnuts,
Jesus can reconstruct the entire vehicle history from there, well apparently so
Marcus
Thanks for the response Mortinson. I've attached an image of the VIN plate. Maybe this should shed some more light on the history.
Martin.
