Fuel Distribution unit?
Hi,
My '85 280GE is struggling to get through the MOT, my friendly spanner man tells me it needs a "fuel distribution unit".
Does anyone know where I could find one?
We have already replaced plug leads, cracked rotor, distributor cap etc to cure a misfire problem, it now runs beautifully unless you happen to be an emissions tester!!!!
Hello John,
I guess you've tried binning the air filter and adjusting it to run as lean as possible plus maybe some injector cleaner at a high concentration.
Is it failing on hydrocarbons? If yes it's not over fueling.
All else fails try Furburs I would guess any 6 cly. merc with mechanical fuel injection will work.
Could be injectors if you pull them out put them in a jar and turn the engine over you should see a fine spray. Anything else and it's faulty. Keep a fire extinguisher handy :D
Oh and has your mechanic disconnected the 7th injector (cold start injector)?
Does he understand mechanical fuel injection? I’m no expert but from my experience if it’s running OK I doubt you need a metering unit. I’m pretty sure someone with the right equipment (try Mike Hughes, Welsh Walls or John Roberts in Wrexham) can test fuel pressures and add / take away shims within the metering unit to alter the fueling.
Could always try clamping one of the fuel lines on a temp. basis?

Christ a yard full of vito's and sprinters I'm surprised he ever gets round to yours. He's obviously up to his neck in crap :D
Just because the electrical bits are new i wouldn't assume they are ok, just a thought
Thanks Russ
Tried so far;
Replaced the air filter and adjusting it to run as lean as possible plus 3 cans of injector cleaner.
Is it failing on hydrocarbons? answer yes.
has your mechanic disconnected the 7th injector (cold start injector)? yes.
We have sourced the fuel distribution unit, its installed, Mot in 30 minutes, fingers crossed.
For future reference using Weston Garage in Oswestry, he mainly works on merc commercials and seems to be very good, if slow he has a yard full of sprinters, vitos etc which tend to be worked on first but he does know his way around merc mechanicals. (25+ years).
