Hello I am new here, i'm from the Netherlands so my english is not optimal.

Last year I sold my 280SE and bought me a G-class 460 the car is 25 year old, means that its tax free here in holland.

So i own a 460 with a 617A and a 4-matic, I like to hear some story's from people who have experience with this engine and gearbox.
I mean fuel consumption, topspeed, how durable is this engine and gearbox?
etc etc....
post pics later

Greetings,

Maarten

Top g Marteen,

Must be a lovely combination.... power with an auto box.

I had an immaculate 300GD LWB Auto, but in the UK, Turbo (617a) engines were not offered. It was horrendously slow... so I parted with it.

Fuel consumption wasn't that clever either as you were always gunning it to get it to move.

Some on here have imported and fitted the 617a engines to their UK cars. I'm sure some of them will be only too happy to swap stories with you.

In the meantime... enjoy the Forum and Tax free motoring :D

Re: user experience 617A and a 4-matic

Got a lwb with a five pot diesel in, had it since 6months old, just passed 660,000 miles on same engine with no problems.
Regular servicing is the key. Did need to get the auto box re-built at over 500,000 miles but it has had a hard life & still works every day here at the G-class centre on recovery jobs, deliveries & so on.
Should last you a while!

Maarten,

Is the 617A a genuine OM617A as fitted to the W123 300 Turbodiesel and some other US-W123 versions?

If this is the case then you have nailed it! That engine, mated to that gearbox is the almost perfect combination for a W460. The engine, if properly serviced, is good for a million kms, and the gearbox is the factory approved combination for that engine -no OM617A was ever mated to a manual gearbox, these were not trusted by MB to cope with the torque delivered by the OM617A.

As for performance, top speed whould be in the region of 94 mph (150 kph) with average consumption of some 20 mpg (14 litres/100km).

Enjoy your G!

Except for the MB guard models that is: armoured s-classes which were fitted with manual transmissions. My 617a is out of scuh a car and came with flywheel.
But there were only a handfull made

Cheers

Richard

Re: user experience 617A and a 4-matic

I have a 89 lwb. 460gd with a4speed auto box which is great because it takes strain out of making It move a little faster. Living in the vale of York (no hills) the normally aspirated five pot is adequate. but once you attach a 2-3 tonne trailer overtaking and slight gradients are a challenge .I am hoping to import a used 617a engine from America where there seems to be a plentiful supply. Having studied this site long and hard I understand a bit of creative work with the exhaust is required. However will a617a fit strait onto 4 speed auto? Does it require a different radiator? Also has anyone else imported parts from the US? Any advice and wisdom gratefully received
