G-virgin advice......
Hi - I am thinking of buying a G for the first time. I recently had to sell my Land Rover 110 because the positioning of the steering wheel (ie too far to the right) gave me shoulder problems over the course of a few months. I don't imagine the same kind of problems exist with the G-Wagen, but could anyone let me know what I would be in for (I would have about a £6K budget), and how you think the general driving experience would compare to a V8 110 (if that's not too insulting.....)?
I would really appreciate your advice before starting to look seriously.
Many thanks
Ash
Ash,
I know some Land Rovers quite well, including the one you had. The biggest difference you will notice is the solidity and build quality of the G-wagen. And if you go off-road, then you will find it way more capable.
The V8 you had makes about the same bhp as a 280GE. For the money you want to spend, you should be able to get an absolute mint low mileage example of a W460(1979-1990) 280GE. Otherwise, you could look at an early W463(1991-current) 300GE or 300GD in less than perfect shape. W460 and W463 being the model series. We can try and advise here by writing pages and pages of opinions, but best would be to have a good look through the posts on this site/forum. It is very rich in content and you will learn a lot. Once you have done that, come back and ask questions.
Be warned though that G-wagen ownership is a life-changing event when it happens. I have owned many different 4x4's, including Land Rovers, Chevy Blazer, Nissan Patrol, Toyota Landcruiser, Hilux and a few more. My first G made me realise what I missed all along. At least for the criteria of a top performing off-roader which is also perfectly suitable for everyday use.
and if you need someone nosy to tag along and check out a car with you, if it's in the area (i'm about a half-hour drive west from melton), then lemme know. weekends work best, between me and a friend, we have coverage of 461s, 463s, so 460s come naturally :p
Thanks mate.
