Diesel Conversion.
:D Hello everyone! Just at this moment I am a "prospective" new member.Right now I don't own a "G" but I'm seriously considering purchasing one in the very near future.I have been offered a very nice SWB 1987- with a totally blown up 280 Petrol engine.I have in my possession a 123 series 300D auto estate -1983 vintage.
The engine is in superb condition low mileage a genuine 130,000 - oh and the auto box has done less than 10,000 mls since being reconditioned. (You have probably guessed the rest) - but I am seriously interested to hear members views on a Diesel conversion.Ideally,I would like to do a complete "swop" engine and box from the estate straight into the G wagon.I wish to know - from the technical experts - is this changeover feasible? Can I get away with a straight swop? - Is the gearbox identical? Are the engine mountings identical - or exchangeable? I know I shall have to modify the electrics for the glow plugs. - And when its all done I also realise the set up wont go like a jet!!! But speed isnt my objective, just the challenge of utilising a v/good redundant unit from my old estate (the body is shot) and obviously the challenge of owning my 1st "G".Oh, one more point the SWB has a very fine body and chassis with no corrosion.Needless to say all advice will be greatly appreciated - and should the project go ahead then I shall not hesitate to become a fully fledged member of what appears to be a very fine club - thats in addition to my Mercedes Club membership!. Regards to all. Dino.

:D Welcome Dino ,
Having fitted a 617 engine into my 280 I can say all went well .
mine whent to a four speed box all mounts lined up fine .
replaced the exhaust , used hydralic flexy pipes pipes to the oil cooler ,
same radiator remeber mine being manual doent have a oil cooler on the radiator as a auto does , same fual tank remove the acumulator , I left the pump on but you dont need to .
my advise is confirm your doner box fits then go from there you will need to confirm the prop from engine to transfer box will fit .
someone far more knowlegeable will confirm the technical details.
or make it easy for yourself and get Merv to do it .
all the best
Cliff :D
