What is the biggest wheel / tire combination I can fit to a 280SWB. It has the standard 205s on MB alloys on at present but I would like a bigger off road set.

Richard I have sent you a PM.

I guess you mean without modification to springs, shocks, bodylift and so on.

If you retain your rims: 235/85R16 (with the 5.5x16" steel/alloy rim)

If you go for 15" rim, I think it would be 32x10.5R15 (7x15 alloys), but you will need the flared wheelarches to pass the MOT.

I don't think that it's worth to go for a wider 16" rim without additional modifications to springs, shocks, bodylift

Obviously cheapest option is first one. You'll gain a lot in height and poise.

Cheers

i can source brand new 8x15 or 16 alloys, i have a set on my g with 35 10.5 r 15 bf goodrich muds on them, you just need a 2 inch lift, and chop a bit off of the outrigger tubes behind the front wheels.

Re: 460 off road wheels

I have 245/70/16 mud terrain on both my LWB and SWB without any problems.

My next set will be 245 again.

235/85-16 would be my suggestion as a start. Colways are cheap enough and damn good. As this size was optional with a new W460, no modifications are necessary and you also wouldn't have any problems in regards to insurance, european travel, etc.
Depends how extreme you like your off-roading, but mostly one modification leads to another and it never really ends...

Re: 460 off road wheels

Thanks. However, I am a little confused by all the sizes. I have the wheel arch flares and want to buy new rims and tyres. I do not want to make any other alterations to myt G. Sorry for being slow.

Re: 460 off road wheels

Am I right that 235/18/16 seems to be the best option?

I have the standard semperit 205/something/16 on at present. They are ok and look about as wide as yours.

I will bring them on an off road day in Wales and see how they get on.

They are as wide, but TwoDogs' tyre is much larger than yours, making it a much more suitable proposition for offroading.

I reckon that 205's must look positively puny under the flared wheelarches. This can be improved with the 235s. Getting something wider would imply changing the rims to the 7x15" alloys, which would add to the cost of the new tyres.

I would simply stick to your current rim and fit the 235/85R16 tryes, You'll notice the difference for a moderate amount of cash.

Re: 460 off road wheels

Thanks, but how much would it cost to buy new steel rims so I can fit the the same tyres as Two Dogs has? I would then have two sets of wheels. The tyres I have on at present at almost like new, 75% plus on them. N
