Silly Question

Why do MB charge different prices for the same car in different countries? I know it is because they can make more money, but I guess a G costs the same to produce regardless if it is the same spec.

MB offer european collection of some models, Gs included. What would happen if you bought one and arranged European collection, but then drove it back to the UK? Warranty problems but that would be about it.

Perhaps a fairer system would be a price at the factory for a certian spec. You would then pay for extras and delivery to the country of your choice. I guess it is not going to happen though as all governments enjoy screwing us for tax and are happy to let big corps like DB screw us a bit as well.

Re: Silly Question

It is just as you said: MB charges whatever they feel they can charge to maximize their profits, in the same manner as any other manufacturer.

This is called Capitalism and it is about maximizing profits whatever the costs (social-, environmental, etc) by means of charging as much as each market is prepared to pay. This is why the UK has enjoyed for many years the highest car (pre-tax) prices in virtually the entire world: because Brits are so obsessed with keeping up with the Joneses that they would pay virtually anything. Denmark, on the other hand has huge purchase taxes on cars and so the manufacturers tend to offer their cars for very little money there.

As an example, these are the latest pre- and after tax prices for G-Wagens in Spain (where we have a 28% VAT+purchase tax):

CLASE G
EUROS
MODELO CHASIS CV sin impuest. con impuest.
G-320 CDI 3P 463,340 224 55.193,75 € 70.648,00 €
G-320 CDI 5P 463,341 224 60.193,75 € 77.048,00 €
G-500 3P 463,247 296 69.256,25 € 88.648,00 €
G-500 5P 463.248 296 73.767,50 € 94.422,40 €
G-55 AMG 5P 463.270 476 94.959,38 € 121.548,01 €

MADRID, MARZO DE 2006

that you can compare with the latest German price list that you will find here>

As you can see, Gs are cheaper in Spain than they are in Germany....

As for the warranty issues, they do not exist anymore: following EU directives, manufaturers are liable to fulfill their warranty obligations EU-wide, regardless of where the consumer has purchased his car. You may therefore buy your G in Germany and the warranty will be the same in the UK as if you had purchased the car there.

I went to IKEA yesterday and I was ashamed to realize that it is virtually the only global business that has a just business ethos, based on pricing its products based on their cost and not on "whatever price the market can tolerate" coupled with respect for the enviroment and fair pricing paid to their suppliers worldwide.

Re: Silly Question

I know about the EU wide warranty but understand it is only two years. Going back to my question, do MB have a worldwide warranty, if this would apply to a US G.

Which is the cheapest country to buy a G? Presumably you could buy a UK spec one there in any event.

That is correct, EU warranty is two years.

Warranty is EU-wide, ie. not applicable to US sales.

I don't know which country is cheapest for Gs at the moment but just take a look to an updated list of purchase tax in the EU and you will find it there.

There is no such a thing as UK-spec as far as GWagens is concerned anymore... no RHD GWagens are made except for the G55K which is made to order anyway by AMG. Belgian MB dealers were pretty easy to admit orders for RHD vehicles in the past but given the specialist nature of the only RHD GWagen -the G55K- I doubt that it would be easy in this case. As for the rest, given that they can only be ordered in LHD anyway the only other issue is to specify the speedo in miles which I figure must be very easy.

Well then like I said it's only a matter of ordering a mileometer, plus RHD headlamps. Mr David Watkins, former GWOA Chairman ordered a LHD G300 Turbodiesel new in Germany a few years back with the speedometer in miles but that was the 1998 model year. However, given that they are making 2006 MY G55Ks in RHD, I would assume that the new speedometer is also made in miles so it ought to be a matter of quoting the right code at the time of ordering. Same obviously applies to the headlamps

Mortinson - I'm surprised at you! You of all people know that the speedo in a G55 is not a standard G speedo but is badged AMG and shows a higher top speed....

Re: Silly Question

If anyone wants the it I have the part number for a UK spec 2001 500 speedo and 400. I think they will do the 270 and 320 as well. I also have the 500 uk spec speedo unused. You don't actually need it because you can just switch the speed on the digital display to show mph.

MB want a load to fit it because it is part of the computer?

I also have the part numbers of the clear light for RHD.

If you want any help on parts like this call a dealer in Germany because MB UK either won't help, MB Piccadily, or want to help but their system wont show the RHD options. They all come up straight away on the German system.

¿So?

The point is that there exists a speedometer rated in miles.
