Re: A FEW ENGINE Qs!!

Nope Elvis,
Per merc maint book there are a whole range of oils, grade wise, temp and condition dependent, and these engines are reputed for their longivity, so anything other than complete rubbish should be fine.
Fuel filter is dead straight forward, spin off after slackening nut on top and spin new one on after filling new filter with duty paid diesel of course. He He.
No comments on the inj pump except that I understand that one can advance the timing until they just tinkle.

Re: A FEW ENGINE Qs!!

Once replaced the filter, you may need to purge the air in the system.

There is a manual pump adjacent to the Bosch injection pump. To operate it, you just need to unscrew the yellow round plastic top and then push-pull that bit until you get no more air but diesel coming out of the hole at the side of the manual pump (all thi, if my memeory serves me right).

As far as the enegine oil, for the temperature range in mainland Britain, a 15W40 mineral oil of good quality is more than adequate (I used to use the one sold at Halfords in the black plastic can), provided that you replace the oil filter together with the oil every 5,000 to 7,000 miles or at least once a year.

Cheers
