Are there no grease nipples on the short shaft from the main gear box to the transfer box, I could not find any.

yes there are, or should I say there should be. if its the van you have then some later models on MB commercials were maintanence free, which means they aren't and they fall to bits, MB Atego lorries have no grease nipples, crazy.

Re: greasing prop shafts

Ian,
I was out of touch for a while there and for some reason "unread posts" did not bring this one ( and quite a few others ) "up".
But anyway, it appears to be the case that this one short shaft is "maintenance free"
PS
What is the deal with the grease nipplles that ar'nt nipples, I appreciate they do not protrude/will not catch -- but how does one get grease into them, surley one cannot generate any pressure/grease will squirt out?
I asked around & then swopped for ordinary nipples.

I had the front propshaft of my G replaced a few years back in the UK by one of those which have circlips in the UJs and thus these can be replaced easily. I think I paid something like £ 120 for what is in effect the longer propshaft of them all. Naturally, it comes with grease nipples in the UJs but the central bit, where it is supposed to extend/contract hasn't got any. As my mechanic showed me, the surfaces that contact each other are both covered by Teflon @ by DuPont and are thus maintenance free.

As for the flat grease nipples, they are to be greased using a rigid hose with your grease gun, a fact that is a pain in the neck for most users due to the fact that you don't have either a pit or an elevator and you have to grease them just crawling underneath your G (lack of enough space). In the end, I decided to replace all of them by the conventional ones (shaped as nipples, you know...)

Re: greasing prop shafts

Jesus,
Your input as always is appreciated, but what I was meaning was that I presume that the non nipple Mercedes grease nipples appear to require one to push the gun hard up against them whilst also being "fair fornenst them" to form a seal, or am I missing something.
Elvis,
According to our local Agri shop, the one that sells the Fendt = Rolls Royce of tractors, & Class & Krone and oodles of other kit all full of grease nipples told me they were 11/16", this despite being told it was an Austrian/ German vehicle and that they would prob ( to be polite ) be metric, you know like the ones on the Fendt, Class & Krone as aforesaid mentioned.
The other agri store , literally on the other side of the street, immediaely gave me a handfull for £1.00, 8mm thread I think , but no mystry getting them, probably just as easy from a motor factors.

Re: greasing prop shafts

Marcus,

Yes, I forgot to say that at the end of that rigid hose you have to use an "arrow pointed" tip.

As for the sizes, there are two of them: the ones at the UJs are bigger and double the number (obvious) as those at the middle of the propshafts. What I did is to undo a sample of each of them and take them to my local Agri shop so that they could give me the exact thread. Sorry, I do not have a caliber to measure the exact size, but they are definitely metric.
