Swapping petrol for diesel engines in 463 LHD
Has anyone ever swapped a turbo diesel unit into a 463 LHD petrol vehicle? Is such a thing practicable, or not worth considering? Any suggestions or comments highly welcome!
Everybody is sure it is possible, with small problems to bridge, but I don't think anyone has actually done it. I was going to put 6cyl diesel into 5cyl car. Bought a 5cyl turbo diesel with intercooler and aircon, etc and found it is more than strong enough, has very good fuel consumption and is a lot tougher engine. You wouldn’t really gain enough to go that route. Then rather get one like mine.
I am not a mechanic, but I have done enough technical stuff with and to cars to understand. The gearbox needs changing. Everybody says G box, I would go for a car box if you’re not going to be serious offroading. I was going to drive through Africa and would have gone that route. The ML engine will work, with a mechanical diesel pump, but they are not very popular, rather go for a sprinter engine then.
I suggest either stick your hand DEEP into your pocket and buy exactly what you want, or compromise and by an older, more rugged car.

Thanks- however, do you know if the axle ratios, transfer box, radiator, etc needed changing, or only the engine and possibly the gearbox? How about electronics- would you see any complications in installing say, a 270 cdi 5-Cylinder? Are the parts generally transferable from a donor car, or would an ML or commercial be better?
