I finally got my car yesterday. WHOWWWWW !!!!!! It is amazing. My wife and I got ourselves ready for a comfortable cruising speed of +- 50ml/h when loaded up. This was because of the 5 cyl diesels reputation for speed.

My car is a 1990 (probably ’89) 300 td and it goes like rocking horse s*#t. I stopped accelerating at 90, because such high revs can’t be good for the engine, but at 80 she purrs like a kitten and cruise up hill, down hill and goes level. I am going to add an intercooler and start using veg oil soon, which should give me even more power.

Why doesn’t everybody drive one of these? It goes a hell of a lot better than any 6 cyl. I have driven. It will be interesting what the fuel consumption will be.

Apologies if this has been asked before but what engine exactly go you have in your G? Is it an aftermarket turbocharged 5 cylinder diesel(OM617) or the original 5 cylinder turbodiesel (OM617a) or even a sprinter engine?
Peter Perfect has a valid point with his comment: I blew up my 617a running flatout on the motorway........flatout being 80mph on 34 inch Simex
Expensive but educational experience!

I won't be running her at 90, but I ran her as hard as she could go for a 100 miles to check her out. If something wanted to go it had to go now rather than somewhere in Africa. I think its best cruising speed is 60. I dont know if it is a factory turbo, 617a, how do I find out?

As far as I know (which isn't very far!) :wink: the 617a can have the following enginenumbers:
617.950
617.951
617.952

The normal aspirated diesel is the 617
617.931

Also the sump is different on the two engines, on the turbo it has two parts whereas the N/A is one part.

The 617a is known in Germany as the faith engine, never lets you down as long as it's not worn out and thrashed to death,
Mine cruises at 80mph, 90mph in bursts (verified by a following 463 300tdi) but I do have a 5spd box, as the engine was originaly intended to propel large estate cars down auto routes and free ways at (for the day) relatively high speed, speed isnt the issue, rpms are. also they do like to be serviced and not starved of oil by sitting them at odd angles without the sump conversion.
Mine runs faultlessly and I hope will continue to, on and off road.

Ah well not too worry! New engine is in now and she is up and running again!
The only 'good thing' about the whole episode was that it blew on the continent, 2 days later a 'new' engine had been located!
And thanks to some really good friends I have over there who happen to be Merc mechanics she is alive again.

Time to get it muddy again.....

HI Bill,
can you tell us more about the sump conversion? I am sure that mine is a standard. Plan to take mine offroad into the timber tracks where we sometimes spend hours at odd angles (tilted) while getting through some obstacles.
