I hope I am not looking for trouble now, but does anyone know how good the Disco III is off road? Somebody with a CDV6 wants to join me through the Sahara bit of my trip, but he thinks he might tow me up a few dunes. I beg to differ!

Re: Disco III

Its pretty good, but there are an awful lot of electronic gizmos to go wrong just when you are a long way from home. And Abdul isn't going to be able to fix it with a hammer and a pair of tinsnips. ;)

Re: Disco III

Did no-one see the "test" Mr Clarkson did on topgear? The thing is a pile of shite! Got stuck so many times in the mildest of situations - two wheels high&dry, the other side completely lost...CRAP!!! Ditto new Range Rover. He drove an X3 along a muddy track and got stuck. The R-R couldn't pull it out along a track the X3 had already covered, so they went and fetched a tractor. Wife was screaming out loud for them to go get a G-wagen and threw the remote at the telly cursing!

I am resisting getting involved in this kind of discussion because everytime I do I end up being called names such a Taliban...

Re: Disco III

Leeu.
I had first hand experience with a LR Disco 3 when I joined a LR group laning in Wales recently. I put a report on the US forum. The LR 3 performed quite well given that it was on road tyres and the Welsh mountains were covered in snow and ice, the thing that let it down was the electronic technology and some bad design features.
The suspension kept going in to scrape home mode if you ever let a wheel leave the ground, and the off road setting just took over and did what ever it wanted, the driver didnt know if he was in 4wd 2wd hi or lo front or rear diff locked or both or none the poor guy was constantly trying to re-boot the system to get things working again.
Finaly a puncture (that can happen to any thing) it took two people to get the spare out from under the rear, and because there are 4 specific jacking points on the ladder chassis for the jack(you can't lift any where else with it) you have to lay down at full stretch to get the jack under.
Other than that it did go every where we whent but just held every one up.
It did get ditched once (driver error) and it is so heavy only one vehicle was able to pull it out, guess????

Re: Disco III

I think I have persuaded my mate to take my other G for this trip. We played a bit this weekend and I won't even describe the capabilities of the III. In my opinion it is a pile of S*#t! Heavy $*#t! And it is the first car I have seen losing a spare wheel.

I read a SA test on the new GL. It is pretty impressive, and at the price, +-£45k, I would considder it for a everyday car. IF I COULD! Unfortunately I wouldn't be able to afford for at least 5 years...

And don't forget that the transfer cases in both the Disco 3 and Free Lander were designed and are built by a certain Austrian company, Magna Drivetrain. So it can't be all that Bad :D
