Auto box in 290gd
Hi,
Will anyone enlighten me, auto box has been losing fluid, its still on the dipstick though, I want to top up at least but should probably drain, replace filter/filters? did I see a gasket mentioned elsewhere?
I am just on my way to motor factors for transmission fluid, what else do I need then ?
Oh and where do I find the hole to put the fluid in ?
P.S.
I did search and scan all "auto" entries without success.

There is a seal which should be replaced at the bottom of the 'box. The filter is housed there. That is probably what you are referring too not a gasket as such. It's about £10 odd.
You refill the box with fluid through the dipstick tube. And NO that is not taking the ****. :D
Hi guys, it's time for an oil change on mine (280ge auto '86), but does the auto box fluid need changing regularly? If so how often?
Whilst I'm there anything else I should be checking/ changing?
If you want to be anal about it and especially if you don’t know how long the fluid has been in there, drain the box from the dipstick tube on the oil pan when warm. Re-fill with new fluid and drive it for a few hundred miles. The new fluid will have a cleaning effect on the box. Then drain again and drain the torque converter too. Change filter and re-fill. Be very careful to maintain absolute cleanliness when doing it, auto transmissions hate dirt.
It could have been contaminated(if in fact it is) by many external sources in the past including heaving towing. It may never have been changed in the G's life. MB recommend 40K miles which I think is too long and do it at 24000 incl. filter. The 'box has a vent up high but it could get water in through there. Best thing is drain it and if it looks very bad then do as Ernest suggests and replace it again in 100 or so mikles. Once the gearbox is damaged it is a costly repair and makes driving a MB unpleasant
if your towing alot then get a higher grade that does'nt get as hot, like Morris's (of shrewsbury) liquamatic 11.
Thanks for that Roly,
Btw I also saw somewhere during my search that rusty coloured ( as opposed to clearish red ) transmission fluid was a sign of an abused box, any truth in this, is it possible to abuse auto box during road usuage, towing perhaps?
What was showing on the dipstick looked a bit suspect per above, I will know better when I drain later today.
Cheers,
Marcus
