In my restoration I have just taken the tank off, it was easy.. and NO i did nt snap the straps  8)
I have found the tank to be in good order and the under plate luckily but the insulation on the top that protects from tailpipe heat was mush, just fell apart does anyone have an alternative product or is it available seperately from MB

Rockwool or a similar product that AGA or Rayburn use is perfect.Any boiler or woodburner stockist will keep it.Bruce..

Thank you twice bruce, living in france there is alot of wood burners and fire equipment for sale even in the local DIY shop I have now found a mat that will withstand 1200degrees and not hold water and even a special heat/fire proof adhesive to glue it on with.

Try:  http://www.google.co.uk/search?q=exhaust+heat+resistant+tapes&rls=com.mi...

You should be able to get similar straps from any Motor accessories shops.
