The Beast is now on my drive!
Hi, Finally picked up my 280GE LWB 88/E today I fetched her from a chap in a little village called Stradishall, Suffolk. and drove her the 120 miles back to Coventry, she cruised at 70mph all the way without so much as a squeak, rattle or vibration.
She has only covered 82,000 miles from new and has all her original books and a fully stamped service history until 2003, from then on a pile of receipts and invoices along with the MOT's keep the history in check!
Any suggestions on continuing the maintenance i.e. recommendations on as and when the oil needs changing or any other pointers on keeping her ticking over nicely!
Andy
P.S. Oddly enough the passenger seat is a Recaro but the drivers is not is this normal or has something been changed! :?
Congrats on your new G.
Possibly the drivers seat is not original as :
1) the Recaro was an option on the 460.
2) G seats do wear a lot due to people sliding in and out - the cloth seats even more.
So my guess is that it had Recaros but the drivers was replaced.
Do a search on the forum - the Recaro is not G specific - I think there was some boy racer that came with them as well and thus they are not so difficult to find as might be thought - you will need an adapter for it though but your current seat may already have this
Jelley. I may have what you want... PM me
oil every 6000 use a cheap 20w50 oil, dont need any fancy synthectic stuff. the thick oil keeps the tappets quiet, the 280 is a double oervhead cam and runs a mass of metal above which needs a 20w50 oil.
If its auto find out when the oil and filter were changed last, if not sure do it as a matter of course, also fuel filter.
dont use Bosch plugs, use NGK, had no end of ag with bosch in my 280's. other than that she'll be fine, you may need to clean the breather gauze inside the rocker cover, this gets jammed with crud and prevents top end breathing and can encourage valve guide seal wear due to pressure. to get at this you will need to drill out rivets to take of metal cover plate to get to gauze.
"clean the breather gauze inside the rocker cover",
Where abouts is this located so I might as well, do mine?
as you look at the engine underneath the air intake pipe is a small rubber hose that runs from the bottom of the air intake pipe and goes into the side of the rocker cover (ride hand side rocker). This is where it is located. Take the rocker cover off and you will see a plate take this plate off and behind you will see a metal gauze. clean it with parrafin. if its really clogged you may have to burn it off.
Many thanks I have placed an add in the wanted section for either a drivers Recaro or a normal passenger seat!
