Injector leak around base

On my 603 engine you can hear a strange ticking sound around the base of the injector, I had the injector recon, thinking that would solve it but seems the injectors screw into a coller/ insert which is also screwed in the cylinder head, and compression is leaking past. Still runs ok, just a little more noisy. How difficult is it to reaplce the insert :?: , and will it just be the gasket that has failed or does anything crack in there?
Thanks

Re: Injector leak around base

Are you sure that it is the injector that is making the ticking sound?
The hydraulic elements also make the same ticking sound when they get older. They are the part between the camshaft and the valve. I had mine done and the sound went

Unfortunately you can feel the gas rushing past the injector base, does anyone know dp you have to take the cylinder head off to replace these inserts?
Roly, was your engine much quieter after replacing the hydraulic elements? And the cost, parts only?
Thanks

Re: Injector leak around base

Can't help with the injector problem, but any decent diesel service place would be able to advise.
When I replaced the hydraulic elements it did quieten down the engine. It sounds "tappetty" before. And that is exactly what was happening, the valves were not adjusted correctly. After the replacement it sounded much better.
The elements were £12 ea + the labour element was £3-400 I think. The timing chain needs to be removed to release the camshaft which must be removed also. I was replacing my chain anyway as it had 180 000 miles on it and I was concerned at it breaking. It was fine according to the mech.
At speed I'm sure it ran better because the valves were adjusted correctly again.

Picked up the insert , looks like yopu probably need a special tool to remove them.Doubt it will cure the leak, unless mine has just loosened, Diesel place said most Mercedes diesel's have these inserts, have they not given grief on 5cylinder engines?
