Free 460 for first reply
New boy with sense of humour, there;s no such thing as a free 460 I just paid £2,800.00 for mine, looks good and already beating the 110 with the difflocks engaged, but it's so slow!
Just wish i'd found this forum before I'd bought the old bus, any tips from anyone great fully received.
Just bought a 1985 300GD 'turbo'??? on flea bay, great fun, but boy is it slow, i get back in to the defender and it feels like a sports car!
However looks like the 54plate 110 XS will be up for sale as i just love the G.
Now if i could just sort out that sloppy gear change and the fact that my turbo that doesn't feel like it's boosting.
Any tips greatfully received
And yes I will be sending off my money to the club!!!!
Well they are abit slow but that's just part of the deal. You already have 2 so you must have been bitten by the G bug.
:D
Welcome
Welcome, I’m just up the road from yourself, Trefonen nr Oswestry and work some of the time in Queensferry (lovely place….not!).
Sloppy gear change.
Seem to remember reading somewhere on this forum that this is an easy fix. Nylon bushes need replacing. Not too sure mine is an auto so didn’t take much interest.
Russ
oswestry you say. did a lot of biking up there nice place.
Mm yes sloppy gear change.. I did mine made whole lot of difference 5 bushes from MB cost me about £3 at the time and about half hour job. It got to the point i could nt even get it into gear.
chilipepper, 54 plate Td5, take the turbo of it and see how fast it is then, you can't compare the old g to a 54 plate landrover, give the old girl a chance. The 300GD was not desinged to have a turbo, be gentle or she will pop!!.
best thing is tow the g with the landorver to the off road site.
Happy days.
:D :D
Thanks to all my new friends for the info, i'll have a look at the bushes at the weekend and report back.
With regard to the turbo on my 1985 300GD, I was assured that mine is a 'rare' factory fitted item, did such a thing exist in RHD or was I sold a pup?
And if it did exist does anyone know the BHP it would have been putting out? It holds 75 no prob's and I even saw 90 on the speedo on the way to manchester yesterday (no excess smoke, I had a friend following and i was watching the gauges) however it did take a looooonnnngggg time to get over 75.
I'm made up with the G, the defender will be going once the G's all sorted and can be used every day for work.
:D :D
The W460 300 GD was never offered with turbo fitted. Neither in LHD nor in RHD. The only possibilitythat you have not been swindled is if your G was retrofitted with the engine from a W123 300 Turbodiesel. That you can find with the VIN of your G.
Thanks,
The G's going into the garage on tuesday to be checked over, i'll find out if the Turbos connected then!
I'll start a tread in the engine section if it turns out to be a horror story.
thanks for everyone's help.
As I said, send us the complete VIN of the truck and we can investigate whether it's got matching numbers...
I believe that it is on the LHS of the block, just underneath the edge of the engine head.
Unfortunately, I won't have access to my EPC until the weekend so I won't be able to check until then.
Cheers

pedal or petrol?
Impressive mountain bike location 1/2 mile down the road. Completely berserk down hill stuff. Not me though it hurts too much and don’t have the nerve for it anymore. Kids do it though. Soon to be a land fill site though, more money in it i guess
motor. yeh they turned the land round here into landfill, its ok to ride on on a sunday tho as its empty and its the most challenging stuff to practise on down here. up where you are though is like heaven!
Just found my engine number 61793120013079
Do you think it’s a retrofitted engine or just an ‘add on’?
Turbo definitely connected and giving 0.9bar boost will this blow the seals eventually?
Thanks for your help
chilipepper
The engine is clearly the original based on the car's datacard which is printed below:
