Went to the G this morning, turned Ignition key, and nothing.

Story so far:
The fuel pump did run for it’s usual 1-2 seconds when ignition key turned.

Checked for volts at the Red/black wire to solenoid – no volts when ignition key turned.

Suspect ignition switch.

Start to dismantle dash around ignition switch.

Attempted to remove switch by undoing clamp at steering column. Some amount of tugging and general fiddling with wires at back of switch went on at this point, which may explain what happened next.

Turned key, and yes you guessed it starter motor engaged and engine fired.

So I have an intermittent fault, just great because you know its going to come back to bite you.

By the way its an auto, so the switch in the gear selector maybe dodgy. I did move the selector numerous times from park through to neutral etc.

So couple of questions:

Anyone else had similar, if so what was it?

How do I get at the switch associated with the gear selector? Is it a case of removing the 4 bolts that you get to by removing the trim around the gear selector? It has never started when in park (as I would have expected), only neutral which maybe a clue.

Thanks,
Russ

Re: Ignition Switch Problem?

i would say that it is most likely the switch, since it should work in park.
the inhibitor switch itself will be on the side of the gearbox, not in the console with the selector.

Re: Ignition Switch Problem?

Thanks for that, pretty sure it is the inhibitor switch as it did it again but moving the selector from park through to neutral a couple of times fixed it (temporarily!).

Where about is the switch on the gearbox?
Looking from the front of the G is it on the right(passenger) or left(driver) side of the gearbox?

Thanks
Russ

Re: Ignition Switch Problem?

Well 6 inches of snow this morning and a totally dead G Wagen, just great.

I’ve crawled under it (in the snow!) and I just can not find the gear selector isolator switch.

Anyone know where it is and how to get at it?

Getting desperate and p****d off with it now. Matches anyone?
