Re: 460 tyre size ?

Hi Cliff
I have 235 85 16 BFG all terrains on standard steels
On full lock, (in one direction only), the tyre rubs the hockey stick suspension member, ( don't know the correct name maybe a leading arm as opposed to a trailing arm). The effect is that this arm has a polished section about two inches square, other that that I am happy enough with the fit, (you quickly learn just to back off the lock a fraction. Having said that, if my steering was centred properly maybe it wouldn't rub in either direction. All in all I don't find it a problem.
BUT
If you did go for a diesel, especially the 617, it may interest you to know that I noticed a big drop in acceleration, (don't know if thats the right word), with these tyres on due higher gearing effect. It could be hard to find a 617 turbo.
I wonder if the 300 diesel of a 95 or 96 W124 can be made to fit easily. It has a multivale head which gives it 135 bhp, I think, without a turbo which might not be a bad thing power delivery wise. A big difference to the standard 617s 88bhp

You can adjust the steering stop to prevent the tyres rubbing on the arms. by the looks of the one you have bought from ebay, I wouldnt go mad on engine transplants, you wont get your money back. the 280 is a good strong lump. Yeah ,it like's the old desert yoghurt but it depends on the mileage your going to do
