Hi All
New to the Forum and have found it a great resource for information with regards to my 300GD.
I have a 1987 300GD, I have recently got the bodywork completly refurbished and coverted it to look similar to an G55, all thats left are the wheels, to much work done to mention at the moment.

Anyhow I have a few questions which I am hoping someone out there can help with.

1) Does anyone know of common Oil Leak problems on the 300GD's? My G wagen always leaves a puddle of oil when standing, I have had the engine bay steam cleaned and can only see a small amount of leakage from the rocker cover gasket which will be replaced soon, but it does not seem to leak enough to produce a puddle. Can some point me to other areas I can inspect.
2) After a long run of driving, I notice that oil appears around the breater pipe on top of the rocker cover and around the oil filler cap, what could be causing that? Back pressure? Is there somehow I can check the problem myself?
3) The gearbox is very noisy when idling, if I press the clutch pedal the noise goes away, what could be causing that?

Sorry for all the questions, especially on my first post, but now that the body work is pretty much complete I want to get the mechanics running nicely. I have loads more questions and hope to share my experiences of having the body work rebuilt with anyone who wants to know.

Thanks in advance for your replies!

Re: Common Oil Leaks on 300GD

Hello Mamin,
From experience the rear main seal does leak eventually, it is a big job to replace.
I've removed the engine and inverted it, to replace the rope type oil seal, then replaced the engine and run hoping it doesn't leak again.
Generally if the vehicle leaks more facing down hill than up hill it will be the rear main oil seal on the crank.
Hope this isn't your problem, but most likely it is, there are bolts on the bottom of the bell housing, remove the lower one and see if oil is present.
Gear box could be the throwout bearing on your clutch.
Good luck

Re: Common Oil Leaks on 300GD

Good day Mr Mamin!
Got a 300gd myself with the same probs. have traced the leaks to front gaskets which are brittle with age & allow a small amount of oil past. the oil at rocker breather is another common prob, (on mine anyway) replaced breather pipes which were stiff with age, use jubilee clips on joints, prob solved.
Had gearbox clatter on one, turned out to be gearbox bearings.
pm me for more info.
Will we see you at the AGM this year?
ReGards,
Merv!

Re: Common Oil Leaks on 300GD

Hi Mervyn
Will check into the areas you have described.
I am going to do my best to get to the AGM, I am also looking to become a member of GWOA, I can see myself buying more G's in the future, as soon as I get this one sorted, am enjoying this car loads!
Is the gearbox clatter an easy thing to resolve? I mean what kind of costs am I looking at roughly?
Kind regards.
