oh yes, you guessed it, i finally own a g! i bought the china blue 230 from the for sale section just this afternoon, and i would have written on here sooner but, well, i jus had to drive it really!

after having debates about the colour, i actually like it in real life, but i will be polishing my little soul out this weekend. insurance worked out a total of £60 more than opn my peugeot 206 1.1 which was nice in the end.

Aurthur who i bought it off was great help, and a thanks must go to him, i also apoligise for not staying longer to chat but we were trying to beat the rush hour traffic (as it turned out an army LR had a crash and i sat still in traffic fiddling with all the bits and blinding me dad (he was infront driving) by testing out the spot lights)

i do have a few questions...

1. how do i sign up to the club now, i know there was a lot of debating but i would like to pay my way. (also starting early could mean i one time become the longest subscribed club member)

2. my ariel (i cant spell) seems buggered as all i could get was pirate and local stations. i have a new stereo to put in but would obviously like the best reception. also has any one added more than the 2 speakers?

3. people have mentioned removing the front prop shaft for better economy (i know its stingy but im a student) weve got the ramp to lift it up here etc but can it do any damage running just the rear wheels.

4. i would like to source a knob for the window winder, as one is missing.

thats all i can remember for now, after searching since august i am pretty dam happy, also it sat on the motorway really well.

thanks for anyone who has helped me, hopefully see you all at a club meet.

Tom

p.s how much does the tank hold and cost to fill up, as i have a sick feeling i have done over £30 of fuel tonight!

Re: at last

I'm glad you like it Tom, I presume you saw Goldy that I was doing up. The aerial reception on that is quite poor as well, but since I've put a more modern Blaupunkt in it the reception has improved considerably! It was OEM from one of the 463's we have as I have but a DAB 54 in mine. You'll also need to re-wire it to an ISO DIN connector as I have done in mine. You'll need a wire stripper and a pair of pliars and a couple of MB parts. I have the codes at home and will post them later and I will also find the nob on the window winder as I have the chassis number a copy of the MB EPC. I believe the main tank is 65 Litres and you have one auxiliary tank which is 15 litres I think, some one correct me If I am wrong.

Are you going to be mainly using it on the road, as I would get rid of those Colway MT's on the back, they wont help fuel economy/braking/handling. Recommend Michelin Synchrones, same size.

Enjoy the Wagen, Regards.

Adrian

Re: at last

be very cautious taking off front props coz this turns the oil pump in the transfer box, and can kill off your tbox !!!!

Re: at last

you can take the front prop off, just put the TC in 4wd by pushing lever forward. This engages the oil pump and you will also make the speedo work.

Re: at last

i think i will leave the prop shaft untill spring. first job is the radio, as the sound of wind is getting tedious. i think i need to replace the ariel as it looks a bit broken. i am replacing the stereo with a new alpine unit. i also noticed speaker 'vents' in the rear each side of the rear door, i dont think there are any speakers in there but could someone, a) tell me if this is a correct guess, and b, tell me what size. dont worry i am not going to 'chav' it, i jus like a good clear sound.

as for enjoying it, everyone who has seen it so far thinks its amazing, and i love driving it. my best friend (convinced i was a farm boy before) thinks i could buy a cattle trailer, and my dad has been having a go in it at every opportunity! i will post some pictures as soon as i can go near it without having to go for a drive.

and adrian, did u really need to buy another g. when i turned up there was 5 on the driveway, and yes i saw goldy, sporting the new light weight rear axel.

Re: at last

Ok Tom for the radio kit, you need MA011 545 81 26, these are called contact springs by MB and are what you crimp onto the end of the cables, you will need about eight of these @ 41p each. Then you need one ISO DIN bracket which is MA 202 545 36 28 which Merc calls Pin Bushing housing, which cost me £2.85. The converter kit from halfords is a rip off at £12, not too mention that it is not correct.

As for the nob for the window winder, it doesn't seem to be sold separately from the handle, this is called a window crank by MB and is part No. A1267600102 and is 10.44 euros.

The two black ones are my Dad's cars, the maroon is my brothers(who is also called Tom) and I have a red one. I used to take mine off-roading but it has been beaten and the red paint is turning pink, so i'm going to do that up and give it a rest. Goldy was my answer to my off-roading addiction, something reliable and maintainable enough to off road with, enough power and a nice auto to make things easy and enough space to go on weekend expeditions, it just needs a little work. The axle was off as I am replacing all brake lines and boosters, breathing line, diff lock line and spring seats.

Take it easy Tom

Re: at last

Tom,

Don't you dare remove the front propshaft... apart from the fact that your fuel economy will only improve very, very marginally, you only have to get one of your mates to kick the lever backwards when entering/vacating the G and your transfer case will be cooked in no time!

... and BTW just in case you did not notice: you just bought a G-Wagen. It needs 4wd to be enjoyed as much as older guys need Viagra. Take it off-road and you'll see why.

Enjoy your wagen

Re: at last

mortinson took your advise, been playing in my girfriends fields, amazing fun, some small climbs nothing special but its just having all those levers to use etc!

on the off roading note i have a funny story from chatting to my dads cousins (merc mechanics)

when the g's were first out, there mate (charlie or graham im rubbish with names) was sent on the course to learn about them nd also was a driver on the test day. he was going along on this off road course and the press wanted him to go down a boggy ditch that had been left by a tank, he thought it was to deep but peer pressure won. he entered this ditch and the mud came over the bonnet up to the windscreen, and also in the vent intakes and it shot out from the vents inside covering the press guys. he powered through and made it out, but the notes taken by the press werent so lucky.

i thought it was a gret little bit of g history!

!

Your arieal is a Blaupunkt 7 691 210 031 Profi S15 EH · Universal - not cheap but fits in the hole - took ages to find the right one - I need one for mine - since the local scum snapped it off. Looks - like a bugger to get to the wires at the back of it - cant even feel where it goes! Its not the OEM fitting which would be eaiser to get at but it will save having to deal with the hole on the front.

Looks like you've got a nice little truck.

Re: at last

Slow down men, the early transfer box on a 460 does not have an oil pump. They were introduced on the later 460 range to increase the oil flow when using a PTO.

Many tbox's are probably running on the wrong oil anyway

Re: at last

tis a 1986, fine too. the whole mpg isnt bothering me 2 much now, my 2 jobs make me bout 140 week cash (for 10 hours work its not bad) so its just part of the fun, and its cheaper than the minimum of 500 for a british championship enduro race.

fitting stereo thurs hopefully if merc's have the bits in and getting the windows tinted as soon as the cheque from my peugeot clears. i am loving driving it so much, my girlfriend still needs warming to it, but she enjoyed the fact that everyone stopped at a roundabout earlier to let us go

Re: at last

Although Halfords took an earlier beating, my local one in Malvern has been most helpful.
New aerial fitted today £14.99 + fitting £20. Well worth every penny.
New speakers front and rear Rear Infinity Front JBL fantastic transformation.
