The tyres at the moment are 205/80R16 Michelin off roaders. They look skinny and don't do the G justice. I am looking for a tyre that will spend most of it's time on road.
What size will fit on the wheel and what tyre would anyone recommend?

you can have a 225 or even 235 if you want, Michelin are a good tyre, but so is a BFG A/T, last forever, what do you want to spend, where are you based. Costco do a good price on Michelin tyres, Nene vally off road can do you a good mail order BFG, the skys the limit when it comes to tyres. I agree those 205s look like Karen capenter.

I think I saw a G with what looked like the same standard alloys as mine with 265/75R16.
Is this possible on a standard alloy or are there different sized Mercedes rims as standard on a G?

You've probably seen a 463 G with 15x7.5" rims on, look pretty much the same. We run 255/75 Michelin Synchrones on ours. They also do them in a 235/80 R16 size, which we have got on one of the G's, very good ride as the side walls are high and looks much better on the G. Tried to get hold of some more and it is proving to be very difficult! Also looking for some 235/85 Goodyear AT/R's, but they also seem very hard to get hold of. May just have to source them off the net.
