Well, whilst replacing the glow plugs on the truck I noticed the left front engine mount was a pile of goopy black stuff rather than firm rubber. This explains the cllunking noise from the left front I get now and then.

I grabbed my manual and checked out the proceedure to replace it. Step one - remove engine! I think this is not necessary but that darn left hand one is really tucked in behind all that stuff. Anyone replaced these without removing the eingine?

I have an oil leak where the tranny belhousing meets the engine - just forward of the plastic cover which allows you access to the torque converter drain. There is a removable plate there but I have nto opened it up. Does this mean a bad rear seal?

Thanks all.

you can change with engine in but its a bit of a pig to do, you will have to disconnect all the mounts on the gearbox to give you enoungh lift to do it. Is it an autobox you have?. Is it red trans oil?. Take out plastic or metal drain bung which allows you to drain any water out of the bell housing. if its tranny oil then just check you haven't over filled it. As a matter of course I would make it a habit of chaing auto box filter and fluid anyway.

This all depends on wether you have auto??.

Hey there Guru, I figure I can always count on you. Well, a pig it will be then - it can't be worse than pulling the engine can it unless I can do the rear seal at the same time?

Yes, you are right it is an auto but the leaking oil is disel black. It is not horrible but does leave enough drips to tell when the vehicle was last in the garage - if it is shiney it was recent, if it is dirty and covered with dog hair, it was several hours ago. A good way to track where and when my wife has taken the truck out for a spin.

its not common for the rear crank seal to go on that engine unless its been over filled, try draining oil and re-filling 3/4 and see if the leak disapears. its not a fuel leak is it and dripping down on the crud making it look like an oil leak.

Thanks Peter,

I don;t know the history of this engine so who knows. I guess I will leave it for a rainy day.
